Tributes Flow for Joe Antunes, Beloved Founder of Joe’s Cafe

Condolences are pouring in for Joe Antunes, the founder of the renowned Joe’s Cafe in Vancouver, who passed away recently at the age of 90. The announcement was made by his nephew, Eddie Fernandes, via a heartfelt video posted on the cafe’s social media channels. “Hi guys, I have some extremely sad news today,” said Fernandes. “Uncle Joe passed away last night. He was declining very sharply in the last month or two. And he made it to 90, which he was so proud of.”
Joe Antunes opened his eponymous café in 1976 in the vibrant Commercial Drive’s Italian neighbourhood. Over nearly half a century, the café built a loyal following, becoming a beloved institution in the community. Joe’s Cafe officially closed its doors in October 2022 due to what Fernandes described as “sudden retirement forced by nature.”
A Legacy of Community and Memories
In the years leading up to his passing, Antunes expressed a desire to retire in Portugal. Fernandes shared that Joe had planned a family vacation to the country but ultimately opted to stay there. “In the past, we pushed him to expand and renovate the business, but he always declined. He loved doing things his way and keeping it the same as it’s always been,” Fernandes noted.
The family has decided not to continue Joe’s Cafe, citing its decline and lack of interest in upgrading the establishment. “It has declined over the years and is now worthless. So we decided to shut it down,” Fernandes explained.
As news of Antunes’ passing spread, many took to social media to share their fond memories and condolences. One individual wrote, “Our condolences to the family and friends. Joe was a huge part of our lives, and he will sadly be missed, but the memories and the building on the Drive will keep his memory alive.” Another added, “I am ever grateful for the care that Joe took. He always gave me an extra scoop of ice cream or a quarter to play pinball. Joe was quite the character and always so kind to me as a child.”
“You will always be remembered. Thank you for the many decades of serving the East Vancouver community. You will remain the heart of Commercial Drive,” one tribute stated.
Gathering to Honor Joe Antunes
A wake in honour of Joe Antunes is scheduled for August 24, 2023, at Grandview Park, located across from the now-closed café. Fernandes has indicated that there will be a moment of silence, along with pins and postcards available for attendees. The event description invites the community to “gather as the Joe’s Cafe family, pay respect, and talk about the great memories.”
Joe Antunes’ legacy as a cherished community figure continues to resonate deeply with those who knew him and frequented his café. His commitment to maintaining the charm of Joe’s Cafe and the warmth he extended to his patrons have left an indelible mark on the heart of Vancouver’s Commercial Drive.
