Surrey Mayoral Candidate Unveils ‘City of Champions’ Initiative
Surrey mayoral candidate Mike Starchuk announced a bold new initiative today, aiming to transform the city’s civic identity by replacing the current motto, “The Future Lives Here,” with a new slogan: “City of Champions.” Starchuk, who leads the Imagine Surrey civic party, seeks to honour local figures who have significantly contributed to the community’s development and reputation.
In his statement, Starchuk emphasized the importance of recognizing individuals from various fields, including sports, education, and public service. “As Surrey grows into British Columbia’s largest city, our identity should reflect the best of who we are,” he said. The “City of Champions” pledge aims to celebrate community members whose achievements inspire the next generation.
Plans for Recognition and Celebration
The initiative proposes to name public parks, streets, and civic spaces after notable residents and community leaders. Starchuk highlighted plans for murals, monuments, and public art installations that depict the stories of individuals who have played pivotal roles in shaping Surrey. Storytelling displays in municipal buildings and community centres will further showcase these contributions.
Starchuk cited examples of individuals to be celebrated under this initiative, including Olympic gold medalist Daniel Igali, renowned architect Bing Thom, and veteran Zennosuke Inouye. “This is about lifting Surrey up and building a city identity that reflects who we really are: a city of champions,” he remarked.
The proposal is part of a broader vision focused on enhancing civic pride and showcasing Surrey’s community-driven accomplishments. Starchuk noted that further policy announcements and projects aimed at reinforcing the city’s identity would be introduced in the coming months. “Surrey’s best days are ahead,” he asserted. “We’re ready to lead with pride, deliver results, and build a city that matches its momentum.”
Election Context and Future Plans
Starchuk is a former city councillor and served as a member of the BC NDP in the Surrey-Cloverdale riding. He recently launched the Imagine Surrey party ahead of the municipal election scheduled for October 2026. Earlier this winter, the party announced its first four candidates for Surrey City Council.
The candidates of Imagine Surrey have expressed concerns regarding the current state of the City Council, citing excessive infighting and a delayed response to the transnational extortion crisis as significant issues. In addition to the “City of Champions” initiative, the party has promised improvements such as enhanced sidewalks, expanded rapid transit options, and the development of a new riverfront and stadium for international cricket.
Through these initiatives, Starchuk aims to foster a sense of unity and pride among Surrey’s residents, moving beyond political agendas to focus on the achievements of the community.
