Stratford Terry Fox Run Marks 40 Years of Hope and Fundraising

The Stratford Terry Fox Run is set to celebrate its 40th anniversary with a focus on expanding participation and continuing the legacy of cancer awareness and research. Scheduled for September 14, 2024, at Upper Queen’s Park, the event aims to build on the success of last year, where participants raised $30,000, bringing the total local contributions to over $400,000 since the run’s inception.
According to organizer Rena Spevack, the support for the event has remained steadfast throughout its history, even during the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. “It’s been pretty steady, even during COVID. We had two years during the pandemic when there was a virtual run, and yet the donations were still as good as any other year,” Spevack noted. This resilience highlights the community’s commitment to the cause initiated by Terry Fox in 1980.
The national Terry Fox Foundation is approaching a remarkable milestone of raising $1 billion for cancer research since Fox’s original Marathon of Hope, which covered 5,373 kilometres. This fundraising has supported more than 13,000 cancer research projects, significantly contributing to advancements in treatment and early detection methods.
Spevack emphasized the impact of Fox’s legacy on cancer awareness, particularly regarding lifestyle choices related to cancer prevention. She stated, “Certain lifestyle choices make a big difference on the choices that people make — and awareness is huge.” Her personal connection to the cause is profound; she has witnessed firsthand the devastating effects of cancer on families, having lost her brother, grandfather, and mother to the disease. Her experiences fuel her passion for continuing Fox’s mission: “If there’s a family that we could prevent from having to lose a parent when there are young children, it makes a huge difference on what happens in the child’s life.”
While Spevack does not have a specific fundraising target for this year’s event, she prioritizes increasing community participation and honoring Terry Fox’s memory. “He’s a Canadian hero, and we need to keep remembering him,” she remarked, reinforcing the importance of community involvement in the ongoing fight against cancer.
The Stratford Terry Fox Run will take place from 8:30 AM to 1 PM on September 14, inviting runners and walkers of all ages to join in the effort to raise funds and awareness for cancer research. The event not only commemorates Fox’s legacy but also serves as a reminder of the collective strength in supporting those affected by cancer.
