Sofa Mishap Sparks Living Room Redesign in Toronto Home
A dog’s unexpected destruction of a sofa has prompted a complete redesign of a living room in Little Italy, Toronto. Owner Sandra discovered the damage after returning home to find her beloved couch in tatters, an incident she now views as an opportunity for a fresh start in her home decor.
Renowned interior designer Virginie Martocq has offered her expertise to help Sandra reimagine the space. The current layout divides the long, narrow living room into a television area and a more formal conversation space. To enhance this design, Martocq suggests introducing a narrow sofa table or credenza behind the sectional. This addition would serve to delineate the two zones further and provide a spot for lighting, which would improve ambiance in the darker areas of the room.
Lighting plays a crucial role in Martocq’s vision. She recommends placing a lamp on the antique table next to the new sofa and suggests adding matching chandeliers—one above the coffee table and another in the viewing area. A hand-painted Fortuny silk pendant is highlighted as a potential option, provided the budget allows for it. Such a fixture would complement the antique warmth of Sandra’s furniture while adding an element of sophistication.
Martocq emphasizes the need for a new sofa that features narrower arms, allowing for more seating without crowding the space. She advises investing in a larger area rug, such as creamy jute or sisal, to create a cohesive foundation for the seating arrangement. This would allow the existing antique rug to be layered on top, providing both comfort and style.
In terms of seating, Martocq recommends replacing the current armchairs with simpler, squarer versions that occupy less space. This will create an airy feel in the room. She also suggests choosing furniture in warm greys and caramel tones, accented with cushions that reflect the jewel tones of the antique rug.
To enhance the window area, Martocq proposes simple cream linen curtains hung on a wooden rod that aligns with the room’s color palette. She advises extending the curtain width by about 10 inches on either side to create a more substantial appearance. Additionally, installing wooden vertical blinds beneath the semi-circular window will provide privacy while coordinating with the overall design.
The final aspect of the redesign focuses on paint. While Sandra currently has a blue accent wall, Martocq expresses concern that the dark color may be making the room feel more confined. She suggests either painting the entire room in blue or limiting the color to the television wall, with the rest of the walls in a lighter, neutral tone. This approach would visually shorten and widen the space, making it feel more inviting.
In conclusion, with careful planning and thoughtful design choices, Sandra’s living room can transform into a cozy, stylish environment that balances functionality and aesthetics. By embracing this decorating challenge, she will reclaim her space from her dog and create a warm atmosphere that reflects her personal style.
