Adonai Raphael, a 30-year-old asylum seeker from Haiti, has turned to social media in a bid to secure employment after struggling to find work in Montreal for nearly five months. Despite his efforts, including applying for jobs almost daily, Raphael has faced significant challenges in connecting with potential employers.

Before arriving in Montreal, Raphael lived in Nashville, Tennessee, after being displaced from Haiti. Following a change in U.S. immigration policy, returning to Haiti was not a viable option due to ongoing safety concerns. Seeking support, he chose Montreal for its large Haitian community, where he hoped to find familiarity and assistance.

Community Support Through Social Media

Fluent in French and Creole, Raphael is diligently working to improve his English. He expressed feelings of isolation, stating, “I don’t like to stay in my bedroom every day,” highlighting the emotional toll of his job search. “It’s hard for me. I’m sad because I don’t have friends here too, I’m trying to meet people going to church.”

Raphael’s situation caught the attention of Kortney Wilson, a TV personality and advocate with nearly 300,000 followers on Instagram. Wilson, who is connected to Raphael through a close family in Nashville, decided to leverage her social media platform to assist him. In a heartfelt video, she shared his story and appealed for job opportunities in the Montreal area.

“This is one of those times when I could use social media for good,” Wilson remarked. “I was like, you know what? I’m just gonna throw it out there.” The response to her post was immediate and positive, with numerous individuals reaching out to offer support. “The response has been overwhelming,” Wilson added, noting that the outreach included private messages from companies interested in hiring Raphael.

Hope on the Horizon

Thanks to this community engagement, it appears Raphael may soon secure a position with a local transportation company. “I feel good now, I feel very very happy,” he said, reflecting on the potential job opportunity that could finally alleviate his struggles.

Raphael’s experience underscores the power of social media as a tool for community support and connection. As he continues to navigate his new life in Montreal, this recent development offers him hope and a renewed sense of belonging.
