Shelter Nova Scotia is appealing for donations to support its holiday wish list, which has successfully raised close to CAD 350,000 since its inception in 2020. This charitable non-profit organization operates without full government funding, relying on community contributions to assist those in need within the region.

Community Support and Services

The organization manages seven locations that provide emergency shelter for individuals experiencing homelessness, according to Linda Wilson, CEO of Shelter Nova Scotia. Their facilities include supported, affordable apartment complexes, community residential facilities for individuals transitioning from correctional facilities, and a walk-in shelter offering essential services such as showers and laundry.

“We also do a lot of work with people who are trying to leave encampments and move into housing,” Wilson stated. Given the limited storage space at their facilities, the organization requests monetary donations to purchase necessary items directly. “Any extra space we have we use for beds and services,” Wilson added. “At this time of year, sometimes the gifts we provide people are the only ones they’ll get.”

Increasing Need for Support

The demand for services has escalated significantly over the past decade. A report released in November indicated that approximately 1,200 people are experiencing homelessness in the Halifax Regional Municipality. When Wilson began her work in the 1980s, the number of homeless individuals was only 14.

“I think that more than ever, people in Nova Scotia and across Canada, who may not have been aware of homelessness, certainly are now,” Wilson remarked. “It’s much more visible.” Over the last four years, Shelter Nova Scotia has consistently seen its facilities at full capacity, a stark contrast to earlier years when there were often available beds.

As the holiday season approaches, Shelter Nova Scotia encourages community members to contribute to its wish list to ensure that vulnerable individuals receive the support they need during this critical time.
