Safe Passage, a nonprofit organization based in DeKalb, is hosting its annual Survivor Speak Out and Vigil this evening to support individuals affected by domestic violence. The event will take place at the Egyptian Theatre, located at 135 N. Second St., in downtown DeKalb. Doors will open at 17:30, with speakers scheduled to begin at 18:00. A candlelight vigil will follow the presentations, providing a space for reflection and solidarity among survivors and their families.

This year’s national theme for the event is “With Survivors, Always,” while Safe Passage has adopted “Love Shouldn’t Hurt” as its October theme. The gathering aims to create a supportive environment where survivors can share their experiences and learn about available community resources.

In addition to the Speak Out and Vigil, Safe Passage has organized a series of events throughout the month to raise awareness about domestic violence. One such initiative involves a collaboration with Willretty Flower Co., which will run a fundraiser until October 31. Customers can purchase a “Give Back” bouquet, with proceeds benefiting Safe Passage programs and initiatives.

On October 11, Safe Passage will host a Free Family Fun Run at Lions Community Park in Waterman, starting at 10:00. This family-friendly event will include activities such as crafts and games, aimed at promoting community engagement and support for survivors.

The same day will mark the beginning of the “Paint the Town Purple” campaign, encouraging residents to display purple decorations in solidarity with survivors of domestic violence. The color purple symbolizes awareness for this critical issue.

As part of Purple Thursday on October 16, participants are invited to take the purple pledge against domestic violence by sharing their commitment online using the hashtags #SafePassage and #PurpleThursday. This initiative aims to broaden the conversation about domestic violence on social media platforms.

Another noteworthy event is the Book Club, scheduled for October 18 at 10:00 at the DeKalb Public Library, located at 309 Oak St. Participants will discuss the themes of domestic violence as represented in the book “The Great Alone,” with insights from experts in the field.

Lastly, a fundraising effort with Jersey Mike’s will take place from October 28 to 30. Attendees of Safe Passage events can receive a donation card for a free regular sub with a $3 donation, further supporting the organization’s mission.

For those interested in learning more or participating, additional information is available at www.safepassagedv.org. Safe Passage remains committed to raising awareness and providing essential support to those affected by domestic violence throughout the month and beyond.
