Ron Shearer, a pivotal figure in documenting the early history of Rossland, has left a significant legacy through his extensive research. Shearer, who passed away recently, is remembered for his profound impact on the understanding of the community’s roots, particularly his insights into the development of municipal institutions.

In 2010, during a visit to Rossland for his 60th anniversary reunion of the graduating class of 1949, Shearer first connected with the local heritage community. Jackie Drysdale, chair of the Rossland Heritage Commission at the time, recognized his wealth of knowledge about the town’s history and heritage. She noted, “History and heritage work together to shape our identity and give us a place we call ‘home.'”

The Rossland Heritage Commission, established under Drysdale’s leadership in 2009, played a crucial role in preserving the town’s history. In 2018, the commission encouraged Shearer to compile his research into a book, which he accomplished with their support. The result was the publication of Chicanery, Civility and Celebrations: Tales of Early Rossland in 2019. In the book’s introduction, Shearer explained that it comprises a collection of essays focused on the development of local governance rather than mining history.

Shearer’s approach to documenting Rossland’s history was marked by a deep dive into the intricate narratives surrounding its early municipal institutions. He aimed to highlight the various characters involved in shaping the community, providing a richer understanding of its origins.

A personal anecdote shared by Drysdale exemplifies Shearer’s expertise. While researching the town’s first tax rolls from 1898, Drysdale discovered numerous properties owned by the Nelson and Fort Sheppard Railway Co., a name not associated with the railways that entered Rossland in 1896. Shearer offered a detailed and engaging explanation, showcasing his ability to make complex historical details accessible and compelling.

The Rossland community hopes that Shearer’s unpublished research will be donated to the Rossland Museum by his family, ensuring the safeguarding of his valuable findings for future generations. The museum serves as a repository of local history, making it an ideal home for Shearer’s work.

For those interested in exploring Shearer’s contributions to Rossland’s heritage, his books are available with detailed descriptions on the Rossland Heritage website. They serve as a testament to his dedication to preserving the town’s past and fostering a sense of identity among its residents.

Jackie Drysdale, who has been a significant figure in local governance since her election to the city council in 1980, reflects on Shearer’s impact with gratitude. Her efforts in establishing the Rossland Heritage Commission were instrumental in promoting the understanding of the town’s history, and she remains committed to honoring the legacy of those who contributed to it.

As the community remembers Ron Shearer, his work continues to inspire a collective appreciation for the rich history that shapes Rossland today.
