Last week, the Richmond Heritage Commission awarded four individuals and organizations for their significant contributions to preserving the city’s history. The 2025 Heritage Awards ceremony took place on October 30, 2025, at the Chinese Bunkhouse within the Britannia Shipyards National Historic Site.

This annual event recognizes those who play vital roles in conserving Richmond’s historic places and promoting awareness of its diverse heritage through education, outreach, and advocacy. Among the honorees were Ari and Ruth Burstein, alongside MLK Construction, acknowledged for their efforts in preserving the R.G. Ransford House. Their project involved sensitive infill development through a Heritage Revitalization Agreement, which included not only the conservation of the house but also the addition of a coach house at the rear of the property.

Another recipient, Jay Scott, was recognized for his commitment to London Farm and the London Heritage Farm Society. Scott has dedicated many years to volunteering, serving on the board of directors, and organizing fundraising and outreach initiatives that support the preservation of Richmond’s agricultural heritage.

Additionally, Terry Eastwood received an award for his extensive work with the City of Richmond Archives. His substantial contributions included dedicating time and expertise to various archival projects, as well as engaging in outreach and mentoring efforts.

Former city councillor Harold Steves was also honored for his lifelong dedication to preserving the heritage and history of Steveston. Steves has played an instrumental role in ensuring that the community’s historic buildings, artifacts, photographs, and documents remain part of Richmond’s narrative.

These awards highlight the importance of community involvement in preserving local history and fostering appreciation for Richmond’s cultural heritage.
