Richmond City Hall Commemorates Truth and Reconciliation Day
Richmond City Hall has raised the flag to commemorate **Truth and Reconciliation Day**, a significant event dedicated to acknowledging the history and ongoing impacts of colonialism on Indigenous communities. This observance, taking place on **September 30**, encourages reflection and dialogue about the historical injustices faced by Indigenous peoples.
In conjunction with the flag-raising ceremony, a storytelling event is scheduled for **Thursday, September 25, 2025**, at **Brighouse Library**. This gathering aims to foster understanding and connections through shared narratives. The event will feature local storytellers who will share their experiences and perspectives on truth and reconciliation.
The City of Richmond’s initiative reflects a broader commitment to fostering reconciliation and promoting awareness of Indigenous issues. Mayor **Malcolm Brodie** emphasized the importance of these observances, stating that they serve as a reminder of the work still needed to build respectful relationships with Indigenous communities.
Residents and visitors are encouraged to attend the storytelling event at Brighouse Library, which will provide an opportunity to engage with the cultural heritage of Indigenous peoples. The library will host a series of discussions and activities designed to deepen participants’ understanding of the significance of Truth and Reconciliation Day.
The flag-raising and storytelling event illustrate Richmond’s dedication to inclusivity and respect for diversity. By recognizing this day, the city aims to inspire ongoing conversations that contribute to healing and understanding among all community members.
As September 30 approaches, the City of Richmond invites everyone to participate in these events and reflect on the importance of reconciliation in building a more equitable society.
