The life of Dirk Aberson, a remarkable photographer and former commercial pilot, came to an end recently, leaving behind a legacy of adventure and mentorship. His passing evokes memories not only of his colorful stories but also the profound impact he had on those around him, reminiscent of the loss felt when Diane Nelson and Ted Wyman, fellow colleagues, departed in recent years.

Aberson’s journey began with a passion for flying, which he pursued before transitioning to photography. He honed his craft at the prestigious Pratt Institute, where he developed the skills that would later define his career. One of his most memorable tales involved piloting the dogs of steel magnate Sir James Dunn to the East Coast; a whimsical story that showcased not just his adventurous spirit but his capacity for engaging storytelling.

Despite stepping away from commercial aviation, Aberson maintained a deep love for flying. He owned a Piper Cub, which he kept near his home on the outskirts of Brandon. Friends recount exhilarating yet nerve-wracking experiences in his aircraft, where they would push it out of the hangar and prepare for takeoff, often clearing nearby power lines just moments after launching. His passion for aviation extended to events like the Threshermen’s Reunion in Austin, where he connected with fellow hobby pilots and shared stories that captivated those around him.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Aberson enjoyed a rich personal life filled with diverse interests. He frequently took annual scuba diving trips to warm destinations, utilizing the six weeks of vacation he had accumulated. Those close to him admired his dedication to both work and leisure, striking a balance that many aspire to achieve.

Aberson was also known for his generous spirit, particularly as a mentor to younger journalists at the Brandon Sun. His close relationship with Pat Copps, who reported on police and courts, exemplified his nurturing nature. Copps, whose father Bill was a respected crime reporter at CBC Toronto, found comfort in the fatherly guidance Aberson provided after his father’s passing.

Although Aberson retired in 1995, maintaining connections proved challenging, particularly after the death of his wife, Bev. Reports suggested he remarried and continued to live life to the fullest.

Reflecting on Aberson’s life, Peter Dalla-Vicenza, a former editor and reporter at the Brandon Sun, expressed profound sadness, noting, “When I think of a life well lived, I will always think of Dirk.” His legacy embodies the essence of a life filled with adventure, storytelling, and an unwavering spirit of generosity.

As friends and family bid farewell, they celebrate the memories created and the lessons learned from a life that truly embraced the idea of living fully. Bon voyage, Dirk.
