An estimated 220 runners participated in the sixth annual Gruesome Twosome running event held at Aldergrove Regional Park on August 23, 2023. The event, which combines running with family engagement, featured a record number of participants pushing strollers, with around 15 families joining in. This initiative aims to foster a supportive environment for parents and children, emphasizing the importance of family in fitness.

Event director Courtney McQueen, who owns Run Like a Girl Adventures, expressed her enthusiasm for the turnout. “This event was created and inspired to be a partner running event,” McQueen stated. “At the time when we created it, the partner inspiration came from being young moms and having young children, and we did lots of running with strollers.” The Gruesome Twosome encourages families to come together, supporting each other while enjoying outdoor activities.

Participants had the option to choose from four distance categories: 22K, 11K, 5K, and a 1K “Hooray Fun Run” suitable for all ages. This variety allows runners of different skill levels to participate, making it a community-focused event.

Among the competitors was Roxanne Grimbeek, a resident of Maple Ridge, who tackled the longest distance, marking her first half marathon. “I have always been an avid runner,” Grimbeek shared. “I’ve always been in sports growing up, so having a movement that encourages women to get out there and get active has always kind of hit home to me.”

For Nic Knudsen, an Aldergrove runner, this was his first Gruesome Twosome, although he was familiar with the area. “I’ve done other races at Aldergrove Lake in the past,” Knudsen remarked, adding that the course offers “lots of hills, unbelievable views of [Mount] Baker, and the farmland across 0 Avenue.” His familiarity with the terrain made the experience even more enjoyable.

Another participant, Michael Penner from Willoughby, noted that this was his sixth race of the season. He appreciated the local setting, saying, “It’s local, close to home, and it’s very beautiful here in the park. So it’s a nice place to go for a run.”

Registration for the event included a $5.00 donation to a Vancouver-based nonprofit that provides essential baby gear, such as strollers, cribs, clothing, and bedding, to families in need. This charitable aspect adds a meaningful dimension to the event, allowing participants to contribute to their community while enjoying a day of fitness and fun.

The Gruesome Twosome not only promotes physical health but also strengthens community bonds, making it a significant event on the local running calendar. As it continues to grow in popularity, organizers hope to inspire even more families to embrace active lifestyles together.
