On August 23, 2023, approximately 220 runners participated in the sixth annual Gruesome Twosome running event held at Aldergrove Regional Park. This event not only served as a race but also as a fundraiser aimed at supporting families in need. The turnout included a record number of participants with strollers, nearly 15 entries, highlighting the event’s family-friendly atmosphere.

Encouraging Community Engagement

Event director Courtney McQueen, the owner of Run Like a Girl Adventures, expressed her delight at the increasing number of families taking part. “This event was created and inspired to be a partner running event,” McQueen explained. “At the time when we created it, the partner inspiration came from being young moms and having young children and we did lots of running with strollers. So the appeal was let’s bring families together to support each other as partners, run with your stroller.”

Participants could choose from four different race distances: 22K, 11K, 5K, and a 1K “Hooray Fun Run” designed for all ages. This variety allowed families and runners of all skill levels to engage in the event.

Personal Triumphs and Local Support

Aldergrove resident Roxanne Grimbeek completed the longest distance, marking her first half marathon. “I have always been an avid runner,” she stated. “I’ve always been in sports growing up, so having a movement that encourages women to get out there and get active has always kind of hit home to me.”

Another participant, Nic Knudsen, who has previously run at Aldergrove Lake, noted, “This is an awesome course. I even do my training here. Lots of hills, unbelievable views of [Mount] Baker and the farmland over at the states across 0 Avenue.”

Michael Penner, a resident of Willoughby, participated in his sixth race of the season. He appreciated the event’s local setting, stating, “It’s local, close to home, and it’s very beautiful here in the park. So it’s a nice place to go for a run.”

Registration fees included a $5.00 donation to a Vancouver-based nonprofit that assists families in need by providing essential baby gear such as strollers, cribs, clothing, and bedding. This charitable aspect further enhanced the community spirit of the event, making it a significant occasion for both runners and families alike.

The Gruesome Twosome event continues to grow, representing a successful blend of fitness, family, and philanthropy in the heart of Aldergrove.
