Quilting Group’s Charity Sale Raises Funds for Domestic Violence Support
The annual quilt sale hosted by the St. Andrew’s Quilting Group at St. Andrew’s United Church on October 7, 2023, attracted a significant crowd and was deemed a remarkable success. Members of the group expressed their excitement as all display quilts sold out within just ten minutes of the event’s opening. Lee Porta, a member of the quilting group, noted that the overwhelming demand led to the need for re-hanging quilts multiple times throughout the day.
The St. Andrew’s Quilting Group, which has been a staple in the Edmonton community for decades, dedicated the past year to creating nearly 100 quilts. The only interruption in their preparation came from an unexpected plumbing issue at the church. Although final sales figures are yet to be confirmed, the event typically generates around $10,000 annually, with proceeds this year directed towards the Jessica Martel Memorial Foundation, an organization supporting survivors of domestic violence.
“Our goal is to ensure that everything finds a home,” Porta remarked. Unsold quilts from the event will be displayed at the church the following morning, allowing congregants to appreciate the craftsmanship while seated among the quilts during services. In addition to the annual sale, the group continues to sell slipper socks and baby quilts throughout the year, offering community members additional opportunities to purchase their handmade items.
Porta reflected on the joy of the event, stating, “It’s a sweet thing to see.” The enthusiasm from the community not only highlights the demand for these handmade quilts but also underscores the important cause they support. The quilt sale exemplifies how local initiatives can foster community spirit while contributing to meaningful social causes.
As the quilting group prepares for future events, they remain committed to their mission of providing warmth through their creations and support for those in need within the community.
