Province Partners to Preserve Nearly 200 Affordable Homes
A collaboration between the government of Nova Scotia and the community organization Rooted is set to preserve close to 200 affordable housing units in Dartmouth and Truro. The provincial government has allocated nearly $7 million in grants and loans, enabling Rooted to acquire six properties—three in Dartmouth and three in Truro.
Among the properties purchased are 19 Primrose Street and 2 and 4 Franklyn Court in Dartmouth. This initiative is designed to ensure that current tenants can remain in their homes, with the commitment that the units will remain affordable for a minimum of 30 years or until the mortgages mature.
Investment Impact and Future Plans
Rooted’s Chief Executive Officer, Nick Russell, emphasized the significance of the provincial programs, which allow for stacked funding. This support has facilitated the expansion of Rooted’s portfolio and the preservation of affordability for more housing units in Nova Scotia.
“The impact of housing as critical infrastructure extends to job creation, local economic development, and most importantly, creates the environment for communities to thrive,” Russell stated. The provincial government has made significant investments in affordable housing, amounting to over $283 million for 3,054 affordable units since 2021.
By securing these properties, the partnership aims to address the ongoing need for affordable housing in the region, particularly as communities face rising living costs and housing shortages. The preservation of these units not only supports existing residents but also contributes to the long-term sustainability of the local housing market.
As the collaboration progresses, it will be crucial to monitor how these investments will shape the future of affordable housing in Nova Scotia, especially in light of the increasing demand for accessible living options across the province.
