Couples across Owen Sound celebrated their love on February 14, 2025, during the city’s annual Just Say Yes Valentine’s Day event held at city hall. This occasion provided a unique opportunity for couples to exchange vows in a festive atmosphere, combining the simplicity of a city hall wedding with the charm of a traditional celebration.

Stephan Schmitt and Jennifer Fearnall, who have known each other since childhood but reconnected as adults, were one of the twelve couples who tied the knot that day. Their wedding marked two years since their engagement, which took place over sushi. Surrounded by over 20 guests, the couple exchanged vows in a ceremony that lasted just 45 minutes.

Lee-Anne Kazarian, the marriage coordinator, officiated the event and noted the growth and popularity of the celebration each year. This year, the coinciding of Valentine’s Day with a Saturday allowed couples to invite more guests and plan after-parties. “It was great. They really put it together nicely, and everything went very smoothly,” Schmitt remarked.

The newlyweds arrived at city hall shortly before 13:30, joined by their guests, including two flower girls and a ring bearer. While the final preparations were underway, attendees enjoyed the Couples Refresh Suite sponsored by Body Science, where they could freshen up with various beauty products.

Ceremonies took place in a beautifully decorated atrium with floor-to-ceiling windows, allowing for stunning views of downtown Owen Sound. Kazarian addressed the couples with heartfelt words, emphasizing the significance of their commitment. “You are here today because you are choosing each other. You are choosing someone who enhances you,” she said.

Schmitt and Fearnall prepared personal vows for their ceremony. “Together we will navigate life’s challenges, celebrate its joys, and create a love that is unwavering,” Schmitt expressed. Fearnall responded, “I choose you and our perfectly imperfect adventure.” Following their vows, the couple shared their first kiss as husband and wife amidst the cheers of family and friends.

Reflecting on their experience, Fearnall said, “It exceeded them,” indicating that the event surpassed their expectations. After the ceremony, the new family members and friends proceeded to Shorty’s to continue their celebration, briefly crossing paths with the next couple set to marry at 14:15.

Kazarian reported that approximately 75 couples marry at city hall each year, and the Just Say Yes event aims to enhance the city hall experience by adding a touch of celebration. The fee for participating couples was $500, while a marriage license from the city costs $150. Couples could also obtain their licenses from other municipal offices throughout Ontario.

Photographer Krystal Armitage captured the day’s moments, noting that the event’s format—12 weddings in under 12 hours—was easier to manage than a traditional wedding. “It’s simple, and not in a bad way, I just mean they’re focused on the important parts,” she explained.

The Just Say Yes event not only provided convenience for couples but also added a joyful flair to their special day, marking an unforgettable occasion in the community of Owen Sound.
