Ottawa’s Kiddie Kobbler to Close as Owner Robert Krantzberg Retires
After four decades of serving Ottawa families, the beloved children’s shoe store Kiddie Kobbler on St. Laurent Boulevard is set to close its doors at the end of March 2024. Owner Robert “The Shoeman” Krantzberg announced his retirement, marking the end of an era for a store that has become a staple for parents seeking reliable footwear for their children.
Krantzberg, who has led the store since he was just 19 years old, expressed mixed emotions about stepping back. “I love what I do, people see me happy, I’m here every day,” he stated. “But at this age right now, I’m starting to feel the aches and pains. It’s taking its toll on me.” His decision comes after years of dedication to creating a welcoming environment for families, one that has fostered loyalty across multiple generations.
Generational Loyalty and Fond Memories
The Kiddie Kobbler on St. Laurent Boulevard has been more than just a retail outlet; it has been a cherished community hub. Many customers have fond memories of shopping there, with parents returning to purchase shoes for their own children. Rachel Buliziuk, who lives in British Columbia, shared how she continues to buy shoes from the store for her three-year-old daughter, recalling her own experiences there as a child. “Whenever I come in here, it’s like he remembers me and my daughter and my entire family,” she remarked, highlighting the personal touch that Krantzberg and his team have provided.
Young customers like Britton Walby, 11, also reflect on their long-standing connection with the store, having received their first pair of shoes there at just six months old. Walby expressed uncertainty about where he will go for shoes if the store closes, underscoring the impact that Kiddie Kobbler has had on its community.
A Future in Transition
As Krantzberg prepares for retirement, he has not completely ruled out the possibility of selling the store. He emphasized that any potential new owner must possess a genuine passion for working with children and a commitment to maintaining the store’s legacy. “It’s not just about making money, but bringing a great experience to the people that come through my door,” he stated, highlighting the values that have guided his business for years.
The announcement of the store’s closure was made via a Christmas Day social media post, prompting an outpouring of support and reminiscence from customers. Many have shared their gratitude for the exceptional service and care provided by Krantzberg and his staff over the years. With the store’s closing set for March 31, 2024, families will soon be seeking alternatives for their children’s footwear needs, but the memories of Kiddie Kobbler will undoubtedly remain cherished.
As Krantzberg embarks on this new chapter of his life, his legacy in the community will be defined by the smiles of countless children who have walked through the store’s doors. The impact of Kiddie Kobbler extends far beyond shoes; it has created lasting connections and memories for families throughout Ottawa and beyond.
