Norwegian biathlete Johannes Dale-Skjevdal achieved a historic milestone at the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics on February 9, 2024, by securing the gold medal in the 15-kilometer mass start race. This victory marked Norway’s 17th gold medal of the Games, setting a new record for the most golds won by a nation at a single Winter Olympics. Norway previously held the record with 16 gold medals at the 2022 Beijing Olympics.

Dale-Skjevdal showcased remarkable precision, becoming the only competitor to hit all 20 targets during the race. He took command after the initial standing bout, finishing the five laps on freshly packed snow and facing challenging gusty winds in a time of 39 minutes, 17.1 seconds. His strong performance solidified his position as a top athlete in the biathlon event.

Teammate Sturla Holm Laegreid also delivered an impressive performance, missing just one target and crossing the finish line 10.5 seconds behind Dale-Skjevdal to secure the silver medal. This achievement marked Laegreid’s fifth medal of these Olympic Games, underscoring Norway’s dominance in biathlon.

On the podium, Philipp Horn of Germany initially left the shooting range in third place with only one missed target. However, Quentin Fillon Maillet of France made a strong comeback, overtaking Horn on a significant hill. Fillon Maillet ultimately claimed the bronze medal, finishing 25.6 seconds behind Dale-Skjevdal. He has already enjoyed considerable success at these Olympics, having contributed to gold medals in both the mixed relay and men’s relay, as well as winning gold in the sprint event.

The mass start race featured only the top 30 biathletes, selected based on World Cup rankings and Olympic performance. Athletes competed in five loops of 3 kilometers each, shooting twice from the prone position and twice while standing.

Dale-Skjevdal’s triumph not only adds to Norway’s storied legacy in winter sports but also highlights the competitive spirit and skill that define the biathlon event. As the Olympics continue, the spotlight remains on the athletes who are pushing the limits and setting new benchmarks for future generations.
