Nominations have officially opened for the 2026 Bill Konkin Citizen of the Year Award, an initiative that celebrates individuals who significantly contribute to the community of Burns Lake, British Columbia. This prestigious award, named in honor of William Konkin, a former school principal and community leader, aims to recognize those who dedicate their time and efforts to enhancing the quality of life for residents.

A Legacy of Community Service

Launched in 1973, the award has acknowledged the contributions of 37 individuals and 16 couples over its 53-year history. In addition, three individuals and two couples have been honored as Citizen of the Decade, highlighting their exceptional and sustained commitment to volunteerism. This award focuses on individuals who engage in civic, cultural, social, or charitable activities, often without seeking public recognition for their efforts.

Recent recipients include Pat Unruh, named the 2024 Citizen of the Year after receiving nominations from a record number of local residents. Her initiatives to maintain cleanliness in Burns Lake and her volunteer work at a local thrift store were pivotal in her recognition. In 2023, Norm and Marian Martens were celebrated for their extensive volunteer service, which includes preparing meals for seniors and funeral services through their involvement with Island Gospel and assisting at Ootsa Lake Bible Camp.

Nomination Process and Criteria

Community members are encouraged to nominate deserving individuals or couples by completing a nomination form or submitting a handwritten, signed letter. These forms are accessible at local schools, banks, and businesses throughout Burns Lake. The nomination must include detailed information about the nominee’s contributions, alongside the name and contact number of the nominator.

Nominations must be submitted by February 28, 2026, and sent to the following address: Citizen of the Year Committee, Box 510, Burns Lake, BC V0J 1E0. The confidentiality of both nominees and nominators will be preserved within the committee, and late submissions will not be accepted.

For further inquiries regarding the nomination process, interested individuals can contact Sean at 250-692-6746. The Citizen of the Year Award serves as a reminder of the community’s spirit and the importance of volunteerism in making a positive impact.
