A men’s gathering held on October 16, 2023, in Rankin Inlet attracted 22 participants eager for an afternoon of camaraderie and relaxation. The event, organized by the local men’s committee and supported by the Pulaarvik Kablu Friendship Centre, aimed to create a pressure-free environment for men in the community to enjoy food, games, and fellowship.

Noel Kaludjak, chairperson of the men’s committee, proposed the gathering to his board, which quickly approved the initiative. He collaborated with Jamesie Alariaq from the Pulaarvik Kablu Friendship Centre, who promptly agreed to assist in the planning. Together, they envisioned a day where the men of Rankin Inlet could unwind and connect with one another.

The gathering took place at the Char River, utilizing a newly constructed facility intended for community events. Despite some rain, attendees reported a positive atmosphere, with Kaludjak noting, “Everyone had a really, really good time.”

Upon arrival, participants were welcomed with a variety of food and beverages, including caribou stew and soup, prepared by two local cooks. Kaludjak emphasized the quality of the meals, which included fresh bannock to complement the hearty dishes. “Pulaarvik provided lots of caribou stew and caribou soup and all kinds of country food,” he said.

To encourage participation, each attendee was asked to sign up upon arrival and received a pull ticket for a chance to win prizes throughout the day. The event fostered a sense of community, allowing men to catch up and engage in games. Kaludjak expressed hope that this successful gathering would be the first of many, highlighting the importance of maintaining connections in the community.

Transportation was facilitated by the Pulaarvik Kablu Friendship Centre, which offered bus services, while others arrived in personal vehicles. The collaborative effort between local organizations and community members contributed to the gathering’s success.

Kaludjak’s initiative not only provided a platform for social interaction but also reinforced the bonds within the Rankin Inlet community. As he reflected on the event, he expressed optimism for future gatherings that would continue to foster a supportive and enjoyable environment for the men in the area.
