Children spending Christmas Eve in hospital experienced a touch of comfort this year, thanks to local fundraisers Megan Patrick, aged 9, and 11-year-old Lauren Meadows. The duo successfully completed the 4th Annual Megan and Lauren’s Pajama Extravaganza, delivering more than 1,000 pairs of pajamas across the Windsor-Essex County region.

With the backing of their community and classmates from Centennial Central Public School, the girls collected a remarkable 1,025 pairs of pajamas through school drives, local fundraisers, and donations from various community organizations. The pajamas were distributed to several facilities, including the pediatric floor and neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Windsor Regional Hospital, the labor and delivery department at Erie Shores Healthcare, and the Children’s Hospital at London Health Sciences Centre. Additionally, they reached the Ronald McDonald Houses in Windsor, London, Hamilton, and the SickKids Hospital in Toronto.

The initiative traces its roots back to Christmas Eve in 2018, when Megan, a resident of Stoney Point, was diagnosed with leukemia and spent the holiday in hospital without festive pajamas. Following her recovery, her family launched a pajama drive aimed at ensuring children in Windsor and London hospitals would have special pajamas for Christmas Eve.

In April 2022, Megan faced a second diagnosis of leukemia, which temporarily halted the campaign. Nevertheless, in 2023, Lauren stepped in and decided to ask for pajamas instead of birthday gifts. This effort resulted in more than 500 pairs of pajamas being donated to various hospitals and organizations, including Windsor Regional Hospital and Ronald McDonald House London.

The following year marked another successful campaign, with the girls donating over 600 pairs of pajamas to several health facilities, including Windsor Regional Hospital and Chatham-Kent Health Alliance.

Megan’s mother, Mellissa Patrick, expressed gratitude for the community’s support, stating, “We appreciate that so many people stepped up to help this event be a success again this year. Collecting the pajamas is a big job, but so many people opened their hearts to support our mission to ensure every child in the hospital in our region had a set of Christmas pajamas to wear on Christmas Eve.”

Both Megan and Lauren were delighted to see their school actively participating in the effort by collecting pajamas. Earlier in December, the girls set up a booth at the Tilbury BIA Christmas Market, where they raised $1,500 to purchase additional pajamas, with donations continuing to flow in throughout the holiday season.

The impact of their initiative resonates deeply within the community, providing warmth and comfort to children undergoing treatment during the holiday season. Through their dedication and the generosity of many, Megan and Lauren have turned a personal challenge into a heartfelt mission, ensuring that no child feels alone during Christmas.
