Langley Recovery Centre Unveils New Housing Unit for Residents
The Wagner Hills Treatment Centre in Langley, Canada, has officially opened its new housing unit, the Oakhouse Men’s Facility, designed to enhance the living conditions for men undergoing drug and alcohol recovery. The facility, inaugurated on September 5, 2023, marks a significant upgrade from the origins of the centre, which began in 1981 with basic accommodations.
Located on a farm property originally owned by Wes Wagner, who co-founded the centre with Helmut Boehm, the new facility replaces outdated portable housing. The previous accommodations have been removed to make way for a new parking lot, reflecting the centre’s commitment to improving its infrastructure. The Oakhouse Men’s Facility can accommodate up to 50 residents at a time, offering private rooms and communal spaces designed to foster a sense of community.
Modern Amenities Enhance Resident Experience
The new residence features a range of modern amenities aimed at creating a comfortable environment for its residents. Among these are a state-of-the-art gym filled with contemporary equipment, a doctor’s office for on-site medical appointments, and shared spaces on the second and third floors where residents can relax, engage in conversation, or play games.
The previous gym, which had seen better days with rusted dumbbells housed in a repurposed greenhouse, has been replaced with a facility that emphasizes health and wellness. Current executive director Jason Roberts, who once lived at the centre himself, expressed enthusiasm about the upgrades. “We just really believe that the guys do deserve this,” he stated, highlighting the importance of providing a welcoming environment.
Roberts noted that many residents arrive with feelings of low self-worth, and the new facility aims to counteract this. He remarked, “This sort of building says ‘You’re worth it’,” emphasizing the message of investment in their lives that the new accommodations convey.
Future Developments and Community Integration
Residents began moving into the new facility on June 27, 2023, and occupancy has rapidly increased since then. The centre’s operations extend beyond housing, as it also functions as a working farm where residents participate in various job roles during their treatment. This hands-on approach not only aids recovery but also helps build self-esteem and vocational skills.
Looking ahead, additional projects are planned for the property, including a new woodworking facility that aims to further support residents in their recovery journey. The ongoing development underlines the centre’s commitment to providing high-quality care and resources for individuals seeking a path to sobriety.
The opening of the Oakhouse Men’s Facility represents a pivotal shift in the approach to recovery at Wagner Hills, reinforcing the belief that a supportive and well-equipped environment can significantly impact the rehabilitation process.
