Kankakee County Remembers Jack Klasey: A Local Historian’s Legacy
The Kankakee County community is mourning the loss of local historian and beloved figure, Jack Klasey, who passed away at the age of 86. With over 60 years of dedication to the area, Klasey was renowned for his deep knowledge of local history and his captivating storytelling abilities. His weekly column, “Looking Back,” provided readers with insights into Kankakee County’s rich past, making history accessible and engaging for all.
Klasey’s contributions to the community extended beyond his writing. He was a familiar figure in Kankakee County, where he shared his passion for history with countless residents. His commitment to preserving local heritage left a lasting impact, not only through his writings but also through his personal connections with community members. One of those friends, Bill “BJ” Jurevich, owner of Image Group in Bourbonnais, reflected on Klasey’s charm and dedication. “To have known Jack was to love Jack, a man whose charm and unending love for our community was such a blessing,” Jurevich stated.
Born and raised in Kankakee County, Klasey developed a love for history at an early age. He frequently collaborated with local organizations, including the B. Harley Bradley House, where he served as a valuable resource for historical information. His writings were not merely informative; they were a celebration of the community’s identity. “Jack was an expert source of all things Kankakee,” Jurevich added, emphasizing how Klasey enriched the lives of many students through his works.
Community Tributes Highlight Klasey’s Impact
Klasey’s passion for storytelling resonated with many, including fellow history enthusiast Jake LaMore, host of the WVLI podcast, “This One Time in Kankakee.” LaMore shared a heartfelt tribute on social media, recalling Klasey’s modesty regarding his role as a historian. “Jack told me once that he didn’t consider himself to be a historian but instead a storyteller,” LaMore wrote. This perspective, according to LaMore, drove Klasey to uncover lesser-known historical events to share with his audience.
For Klasey, educating and entertaining the community was a source of joy. His engaging columns sparked curiosity about local history, ensuring that younger generations would appreciate their roots. As LaMore noted, “It was pure enjoyment for him.” Klasey’s legacy as a storyteller and community pillar will undoubtedly endure, as his work continues to inspire those who follow in his footsteps.
The profound impact of Klasey’s work is evident in the outpouring of tributes from friends, colleagues, and community members. Many have shared their personal stories about how Klasey influenced their understanding of Kankakee County’s history. His ability to connect with people and make history come alive is a testament to his dedication and passion.
A Lasting Legacy in Kankakee County
Kankakee County has lost a true icon with the passing of Jack Klasey, but his contributions to the community will not be forgotten. His work has left an indelible mark on the historical landscape of the area. As residents reflect on his life and achievements, it is clear that Klasey’s commitment to storytelling and community engagement has enriched the lives of many.
