The Hoffman Estates football team showcased its determination by defeating cross-town rival Conant 28-14 on October 14, 2023. This victory allowed Hoffman Estates to retain the Mayor’s Cup for the sixth consecutive year, following a challenging period marked by back-to-back losses. The team improved its record to 6-2 overall and 2-2 in the Mid-Suburban Conference West, while Conant fell to 3-5 and was eliminated from postseason contention.

Hoffman Estates surged ahead early, establishing a 14-0 lead. However, Conant responded with a strong performance at the beginning of the second half, tying the game. Hoffman’s Torey Baskin and Landon Ford ultimately delivered the decisive touchdowns, securing the victory for their team. “We were just tired of losing,” Baskin stated. “We really locked in this week and made sure that we handled business.”

Hoffman Estates head coach Tim Heyse expressed pride in his team’s resilience but acknowledged ongoing concerns regarding turnovers. “This team fights until the end, whistle to whistle,” he said. “But we can’t keep shooting ourselves in the foot with turnovers. That has been our Achilles’ heel the last three weeks. It has to stop.”

In the game, Baskin stood out with six receptions for 104 yards, including two significant catches in the third quarter. He made a crucial 21-yard reception on fourth down, followed by an 11-yard touchdown catch from quarterback Austin Lezniak. Ford contributed significantly as well, rushing for 88 yards and scoring two touchdowns, while JMari Jackson added another touchdown run to the tally.

Despite generating three turnovers, Conant struggled to capitalize on these opportunities. The Cougars’ defense, led by Anthony Burns and Joey Rofus, managed to recover a fumble and secure an interception, but their offense only came alive after halftime. Tyler Marchese, Conant’s quarterback, opened the third quarter with a stunning 77-yard touchdown run, later connecting with Sarma Abhimanyu for a touchdown, marking his first completion of the game.

Conant head coach Anthony Donatucci emphasized the need for relentless play, stating, “We asked them to play like their hair was on fire. Just be relentless and take the tempo back. We were fine in the first half; we just shot ourselves in the foot against a good team like Hoffman.”

Despite a strong performance from Conant’s Nathan Kutella, who rushed for 105 yards, including 78 in the second half, the team was unable to score in the fourth quarter. Coach Heyse noted the challenges posed by Conant’s offense, stating, “Their offense really makes you play assignment football. One person screws up their assignment or has a bad alignment, big plays can happen. As long as we were staying in our gaps and doing what we were supposed to do, being disciplined, we were fine.”

As the season progresses, Hoffman Estates will look to build on this victory as they solidify their position in the playoffs, while Conant will regroup in hopes of future success.
