The Golden Mile Centre officially opened its doors in Sault Ste. Marie on January 19, 1976. This new multi-purpose shopping and entertainment complex is located at 77 Great Northern Road and marks a significant addition to the community’s recreational and commercial offerings.

The grand opening festivities are scheduled to run from January 19 to 24, featuring a variety of attractions for visitors. Among the tenants of the Golden Mile Centre are the Scandinavian Ski Shop, Family Amusement Centre, and Pizza Delight. Other notable businesses include the House of Cheese (La Casa del Formaggio) and the Noah’s Ark Pet Shop, catering to a diverse range of interests.

In a related event, a testimonial banquet honoring Lee Rodgers Sr. took place at the Hall of Fame Lounge at Memorial Gardens. The event saw attendance from prominent members of the local community, including former players of the L.G. Rodgers Red Caps softball team, such as Jack Thibeault, Jim Sandvik, Norman Baker, Einar Sandvik, and Lawrence Baker.

The opening of the Golden Mile Centre is part of a broader trend of development in Sault Ste. Marie, reflecting the area’s growth and commitment to enhancing community resources. This initiative aims to provide entertainment and shopping opportunities for residents and visitors alike, fostering a vibrant local economy.

Beyond the Golden Mile Centre, the region has seen various developments over the decades. For instance, plans for the $200,000 Francis H. Clergue public school, to be located at Pine and McNabb streets, are set to be finalized by February 20, 1951.

Additionally, historical weather records from January 17, 1916, noted frigid temperatures dropping to 22 degrees below zero Fahrenheit at the Dominion Tar and Chemical Company’s plant, underscoring the harsh winters that have shaped life in this region.

As the Golden Mile Centre opens its doors, it stands as a testament to the ongoing evolution of Sault Ste. Marie, promising to enhance the community’s recreational landscape while celebrating its rich history.
