Tatum Grim, a senior basketball player from Eastland, has been named the Sauk Valley Athlete of the Week following her impressive performance at the Forreston tournament. Grim played a pivotal role in leading her team to a second-place finish, scoring 17 points in a crucial victory against the Cardinals. Eastland currently boasts a strong record of 7-1, with their only loss coming against the undefeated Stillman Valley.

Recognizing Athletic Excellence

Grim’s coach, Nicole Brinker, praised her dedication and work ethic, stating, “She shows up every day for extra workouts. She works hard, she hustles, she listens, and is an all-around good kid (although too obsessed with Legos).” Brinker highlighted Grim’s versatility, emphasizing her willingness to take on any role necessary for the team’s success. “Tatum is such a fun kid to be around,” she added.

Selected through an online vote, Grim’s recognition reflects not only her individual achievements but also her contributions to the team dynamic. In an exclusive Q&A, Grim shared insights about her passion for basketball and her journey as an athlete.

Insights from Tatum Grim

When asked what drew her to basketball, Grim credited her mother, who coached her during her formative years in YMCA basketball. “My mom helped me be the player I am today. She taught me from a young age how to play basketball the right way and pushed me to become a better basketball player,” Grim explained.

Grim appreciates basketball for its team-oriented nature, stating, “We don’t play as individuals; we play for each other. Basketball has taught me that you can’t be perfect. You’re not going to make all your shots, and you are going to have a bad game. But you go into practice the next day and work hard to get better.”

This season, Grim has focused on improving her shooting speed and free throw accuracy, contributing significantly to her scoring ability. She often dedicates time on Sundays to practice specific skills that may not receive enough attention during team practices. “I think one thing that contributes to my success is going into the gym on Sundays and getting more shots up,” she noted.

The Eastland Cougars have built a strong team chemistry, leading to their successful start this season. Grim expressed confidence in her teammates, stating, “We are playing very well together, but I know we can build on our early success. I think all of my teammates have bought into the team concept.”

Reflecting on the standout moments of the season, Grim highlighted a challenging game against River Ridge/Scales Mound, where the team emerged victorious with a score of 39-36. “We knew going into the game that we needed to work hard to beat them, and we did,” she said.

Grim draws inspiration from athletes like Caitlin Clark, recognizing her confidence and basketball acumen. “I strive to try to be like that. She also has a great mindset and knows how to play smart basketball,” Grim said.

Beyond basketball, Grim is also involved in volleyball and softball, as well as various extracurricular activities, including FCCLA, Student Council, NHS, and Servant Leadership. She noted that her favorite quote is, “The best teams play for each other, not with each other” by Jeff Van Gundy.

After high school, Grim plans to attend Highland Community College to major in business, continuing her journey as both an athlete and a student. Her commitment to her sport and academics showcases her drive for success in all areas of her life.

As the season progresses, Tatum Grim remains a key player to watch, embodying the spirit of teamwork and dedication that defines Eastland basketball.
