On September 6, 2025, approximately 30 dogs and their owners participated in the annual Doggy Dash fundraiser at Polo High School. The event featured a 1-mile walk and a 5K run, both aimed at raising funds for a local animal shelter. The atmosphere was lively, filled with the sounds of barking and tail wagging, under clear skies and pleasant temperatures.

Among the participants was Heidi Miller from Forreston, who, alongside her dog Gunner, chose to compete in the 5K run. Gunner’s readiness for the event was evident as he playfully chewed on his leash prior to the start. The duo also won the costume contest, showcasing the event’s fun spirit.

Another standout was Nova, a three-legged poodle who didn’t let her physical limitation hinder her enthusiasm. She energetically mingled with other dogs, participating in the pre-race rituals. Meanwhile, Hattie, a basset hound, observed the bustling scene calmly from the ground, embodying a relaxed presence amidst the excitement.

Community Support and Fundraising Success

The Doggy Dash was organized by members of Polo High School’s student council, who successfully attracted a good turnout despite initial uncertainty about attendance. Emily Meinert, a teacher and student council adviser, reported a total of 37 participants, including nearly 30 dogs. The event also received support from five local sponsors: Muddy Nuts Coffee, Pet Supplies Plus, Pines Meadow Veterinary Clinic, Northern Illinois Veterinary Services, and Petsmart.

Since its inception four years ago, the Doggy Dash has served as a fun activity for dog owners while raising essential funds for a local animal shelter. This year, the collected funds, amounting to $500, were donated to the Happy Tails Humane Society, located at 1408 McNeil Road, Rock Falls. Happy Tails operates as a limited-intake, no-kill facility, providing shelter and care for stray and abandoned animals until they find permanent homes.

Meinert expressed satisfaction with the event’s impact, stating, “We weren’t sure how many were coming this year, but it was a good turnout on a nice day.” The success of the Doggy Dash highlights the community’s commitment to supporting local animal welfare and fostering a love for pets among residents.
