David Suzuki to Speak at Quadra Island Conservancy’s 35th Anniversary
The Quadra Island Conservancy and Stewardship Society (QICSS) is set to celebrate its 35th anniversary on October 18, 2023, with a special presentation by renowned scientist and environmental activist David Suzuki. His talk, titled “Humanity Over the Edge: Transformation or Extinction,” will address the urgent environmental challenges facing humanity today.
In his address, Dr. Suzuki will emphasize the need for a shift in how society views and interacts with nature. He states, “We must shift from an economy that exploits nature to one that respects and protects it. True change will come not from the top, but from grassroots action and community resilience.” With decades of experience advocating for environmental awareness, Dr. Suzuki has become a prominent figure in promoting sustainable practices and the protection of natural ecosystems.
QICSS aims to utilize this event to develop a funding source to assist individuals with the legal and survey costs of placing conservation covenants on their land. These covenants are vital for protecting wild areas, forests, and wetlands, supporting organic agriculture, and preventing over-development in the Discovery Islands. The society currently holds covenants tied to land titles that last indefinitely, ensuring long-term protection of valuable natural resources.
The event will take place at the Quadra Community Centre, with doors opening at 19:00 for an evening of desserts, tea, and coffee. Attendees will have the opportunity to purchase and have signed copies of Dr. Suzuki’s books until 19:30. Admission is by a suggested donation of $20, with tax receipts issued for donations exceeding this amount. Youth under 18 can attend free of charge, encouraging community engagement and fostering the next generation of environmental stewards.
Dr. Suzuki, known for his prominent role on the CBC science and natural history series The Nature of Things, has dedicated his career to educating the public about environmental issues. His presence at this anniversary event underscores the importance of local action in the face of global ecological crises.
As the QICSS marks this significant milestone, the organization continues to focus on its mission of land stewardship and conservation, ensuring that future generations can experience and protect the natural beauty of Quadra Island and its surrounding areas.
