Couple to Exchange Vows at Windsor Spitfires Game on January 8
A Chatham couple is set to make a memorable statement in the world of sports and romance by holding their wedding ceremony at the centre ice of the WFCU Centre during a Windsor Spitfires game on January 8, 2024. Sheldon Cadotte, 30, and Daylene Trudell, 27, have collaborated with the Windsor Spitfires, who will host their nuptials during the second intermission of the match against the Erie Otters.
Cadotte expressed his excitement, stating, “There’s millions of people around the world that love hockey… Someone had to eventually put their feet on the ice and do a wedding.” This unique ceremony will not only be witnessed by the couple’s friends and family but also by approximately 6,000 fans in attendance, including the Spitfires’ beloved mascots: Bomber, Ace, and Spike.
Unconventional Venue, Personal Significance
For Trudell, the choice of venue is deeply personal. “For me, I grew up going to hockey games my whole life. I actually got Cadotte into going to OHL hockey games,” she shared. Her connection to the sport is evident, as her father played hockey, making the arena a familiar environment throughout her upbringing.
The couple’s journey towards this moment began when Cadotte proposed on the ice at the WFCU Centre during a Spitfires game in April 2023. While proposals at sporting events are not uncommon, this wedding marks a first for the Spitfires franchise, as they have never before hosted a wedding on the ice.
Full Support from the Spitfires Organization
The Windsor Spitfires have generously offered to cover all expenses related to the ceremony. Remo Agostino, the Spitfires’ brand manager, stated, “They’re getting the full Spitfire love from us… This is a big moment for them, a lifetime moment. So we want to make sure that they get all the bells and whistles that we can offer them.” The couple will enjoy a suite for their family and friends to celebrate the occasion.
Though Cadotte and Trudell have only supported the Spitfires for a relatively short time, they have quickly grown fond of the team. Trudell previously supported the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds, while Cadotte favored the Niagara IceDogs. Now, they consider the Spitfires their home team, with Cadotte remarking, “They put everything on the line when they go out there.”
The couple’s wedding day coincides with another celebration, as January 8 marks the birthday of legendary musician Elvis Presley. The WFCU Centre will embrace this theme with Elvis music and decor, promoting the event as “a night of rock n’ roll and romance.”
Trudell reflected on the uniqueness of their wedding venue, saying, “It’s a unique experience.” As preparations continue, both the couple and the Spitfires organization look forward to making this day an unforgettable experience that blends the excitement of hockey with the joy of marriage.
