The BC Thanksgiving Food Drive (BCTFD) has launched its annual campaign aimed at addressing food insecurity in the Okanagan-Shuswap region. This initiative seeks to gather food and financial contributions to support local food banks, which are critical in providing assistance to those in need.

Every September, approximately 5,000 volunteers mobilize across more than 100 communities, including areas within the Thompson Okanagan Region. The organizers highlighted a pressing statistic: “More than 50 percent of Canadians are one paycheque away from needing to use a food bank. An accident, illness, or job loss might be all it takes to push them over the edge.”

The BCTFD is crucial for replenishing supplies and offering monetary donations to food banks in key locations, such as Osoyoos, Penticton, Kelowna, West Kelowna, Vernon, Salmon Arm, and Kamloops. This year, donation bags will be distributed to residents starting on September 15, 2023. Community members are encouraged to fill these bags and leave them out for collection by 9 a.m. on Saturday, September 20, 2023.

In addition to food items, monetary donations are vital to the success of the drive. Individuals can contribute online at www.bctfooddrive.org/donate. Each dollar donated allows local food banks to purchase up to $3 worth of food, significantly increasing the impact of financial contributions.

Residents are encouraged to donate non-perishable food items, including:

– Peanut butter
– Canned fish
– Canned chicken or turkey
– Pasta and rice
– Canned vegetables and fruit
– Soup and stews
– Baby formula and baby food
– Breakfast cereal
– Shelf-stable milk or milk alternatives

As the BCTFD continues its mission, the collective effort of the community plays a vital role in ensuring that food banks can adequately serve those facing food insecurity. The upcoming drive highlights the importance of community engagement in combating hunger and supporting vulnerable populations across British Columbia.
