The annual Jerome Taylor Memorial/Whig-Standard Christmas Hampers of Hope Fund is actively seeking donations to support families in need this holiday season. To date, the campaign has successfully raised more than $56,000, but aims to reach a target of $230,000 by the end of the year, which will provide Christmas gift cards to approximately 3,000 households in Kingston, Ontario.

The campaign, rooted in a rich history, was initiated by former Whig editor Jack Chiang and longtime publisher Fred Laflamme. Their commitment to community welfare has continued to inspire local efforts, with the Whig-Standard maintaining the tradition of helping those less fortunate during the festive season.

Reflecting on the impact of charitable giving, Jan Murphy, editor-in-chief of the Whig-Standard, shared personal experiences that highlight the importance of community support. Since 2015, Murphy has been involved in fundraising initiatives, including a professional wrestling show that raised $1,400 for local charities. Over the past decade, initiatives like Chinlock Wrestling have collectively raised more than $250,000 for various organizations in the Kingston area.

As the holiday season approaches, Murphy emphasizes the significance of community contributions, stating that giving back not only alleviates financial burdens but also provides emotional relief to those facing hardships. “Not having the resources we need during the Christmas season is not only a financial burden, but an emotional one as well,” Murphy noted.

This year, the campaign’s urgency is heightened due to the ongoing economic challenges faced by many. With inflation impacting household budgets, the need for community support is greater than ever. “Your help this year, perhaps more than in any other, will be absolutely meaningful, appreciated, and needed,” Murphy urged.

Individuals wishing to contribute can make donations by cheque, payable to “The Salvation Army Kingston – Hamper Fund.” Donations can be mailed or dropped off at The Salvation Army Christmas Hamper Fund, located at 342 Patrick St., Kingston, ON, K7K 6R6. Contributions exceeding $10 are eligible for a tax receipt, and donors can choose to remain anonymous or have their donations recognized publicly.

For further inquiries or to make credit card donations, interested parties can contact Bonita McCourt at 613-548-4411 or via email at [email protected].

As the campaign progresses, the Whig-Standard will continue to acknowledge contributions in its columns, showcasing the generosity of the community. With the collective effort of residents, this holiday season has the potential to bring joy and relief to many families in Kingston.

Together, the community can make a significant impact, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to celebrate the holidays with dignity and joy.
