Community Celebrates First Responders with Emotional Parade

In a heartfelt display of gratitude, residents of the Eskasoni First Nation honored first responders with a special parade on July 12, 2023. The event aimed to recognize the hard work and dedication of community firefighters, RCMP officers, paramedics, and mental health teams. Organizers were pleasantly surprised by the turnout, as a substantial crowd gathered at the powwow grounds to express their appreciation.
The atmosphere was charged with emotion as attendees applauded not only current first responders but also those who have served in the past. The community came together to enjoy a meal provided by the chief and band council while children played on inflatable attractions. During the event, awards were presented, and speakers shared poignant memories, leading to moments of reflection and tears of gratitude.
Esmond “Blue” Marshall, a District 3 councillor and former first responder, recounted a life-changing experience from 15 years ago when he suffered a massive heart attack. “I had passed for 12 full minutes,” he recalled. “My hero never left me. My hero is here today,” as he pointed to paramedic Neil Derrick-Simon, who has dedicated 35 years to emergency response. Derrick-Simon began his career at just 16 years old, driving an ambulance in Eskasoni, where he responded to calls without a salary—earning only $5 for each trip.
Derrick-Simon reminisced about the day he was called to assist Marshall, stating, “I remember every one of my calls.” His mother, Wilma Simon, also a first responder, spent 35 years as a dispatcher and witnessed significant changes in the field, particularly with advancements in technology. After retiring from dispatch, she transitioned to the mental health sector, continuing her service to the community.
Community Acknowledges the Toll on First Responders
Eskasoni Chief Leroy Denny, himself a certified member of the volunteer fire department, emphasized the importance of recognizing those who keep the community safe. He acknowledged the emotional toll that first responders endure as they face emergencies daily. “It’s 24/7 non-stop. They’re tired, and we need to give back our energy to support them,” he stated.
The past year has been particularly challenging for the community, with an increase in incidents involving accidents, suicides, and health crises. Chief Denny noted that first responders have been on the front lines, responding to numerous calls alongside mental health teams and medical staff. “It’s so important that our community shows our support here today,” he said emotionally.
In addition to honoring current first responders, the event recognized former responders who often lacked the support systems available today. Chief Denny highlighted the need for ongoing support for those who have faced mental health challenges in the past. “They had to deal with their mental health and PTSD issues on their own,” he remarked, expressing gratitude for social workers and crisis teams that play crucial roles in community well-being.
Community Response and Celebration
Participants in the parade expressed their appreciation for the community’s support. RCMP Sgt. Ian Campbell remarked, “We’re very grateful. This is a great turnout, and we feel appreciated.” The parade commenced at Goat Island, winding through the town to the Kiknu Centre, where seniors eagerly awaited the procession. Many waved and offered words of encouragement as service vehicles passed by.
Twelve-year-old Mary Lewis attended the event to honor her uncle, a former first responder. “I want to be here to show how grateful I am to everyone,” she shared. The celebration concluded at the powwow grounds, where families enjoyed BBQ food and children played together.
The parade and appreciation event underscored the community’s deep respect for those who risk their lives daily to ensure safety and health in Eskasoni. As they gathered to celebrate, the message was clear: the contributions of first responders are invaluable, and their dedication deserves recognition and support.
