Colin McNeil Transitions from Policing to Lead The Gathering Place
The transition from a law enforcement career to leading a non-profit organization is not unusual for Colin McNeil, the new executive director of The Gathering Place. McNeil, who spent over three decades in policing, believes his experience will foster connections with the community and help address the increasing demand for services. “My policing background, my work and my volunteering in the community — it’s a natural connection,” he stated during an interview on CBC Radio’s The St. John’s Morning Show.
Meeting Rising Demand for Services
McNeil stepped into his new role just one week ago, at a time when The Gathering Place has reached unprecedented levels of activity. The St. John’s-based organization serves a diverse range of needs, including providing hot meals, laundry facilities, and housing assistance. Currently, the organization has approximately 3,200 registered guests, marking an all-time high, and is serving up to 600 meals daily. In October 2023 alone, McNeil reported that the organization provided over 18,000 meals.
As he settles into his position, McNeil acknowledges the urgency of his role. “It’s a continuous increase. So we’ve had to react to provide those services to our guests, to meet those service demands. And that’s what I intend on doing and what I intend on driving forward,” he said.
A Legacy of Community Engagement
McNeil’s transition follows that of Paul Davis, the previous executive director and another former police officer. Davis, who also served as a premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, left big shoes to fill. McNeil, who last held the position of deputy chief with the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary, emphasized the importance of building strong community ties. He has also been involved in community volunteer work and previously served on the board of Thrive, an organization dedicated to supporting at-risk youth.
“The issue is not going anywhere. Look around in our community, and it’s going on right across the country,” McNeil remarked. He expressed a desire for collective action to address the pressing challenges faced by those in need. “No one has the solutions, and we need to all come together as a community to try to understand what’s happening, so we can try to put solutions in place.”
As The Gathering Place continues to experience significant growth in demand, McNeil’s leadership will be crucial in navigating the challenges ahead. His commitment to fostering community connections may prove essential in enhancing the lives of those who rely on the organization’s services.
