Cloverdale United Church commemorated a series of significant milestones during a gala dinner held on September 13, bringing together nearly 100 attendees. The event celebrated the church’s enduring legacy in the region, marking several key anniversaries in the coming years.

In 2025, the church will observe 75 years at its current location on 58A Avenue. This milestone coincides with the 100th anniversary of the United Church of Canada, formed in 1925 through the union of Canada’s Presbyterian, Methodist, and Congregationalist denominations. Additionally, Cloverdale United Church will celebrate its own centenary, having emerged from the merger of Cloverdale Presbyterian Church and Cloverdale Methodist Church during the national church union.

Community Recognition and Historical Significance

The church’s history in the area dates back 150 years, with its mission and ministry in Cloverdale and Surrey beginning in 1875. Ursula Maxwell-Lewis, a columnist for the Cloverdale Reporter, attended the gala and remarked on the sharing of “a wealth of historic memories and good wishes” in the newly renovated heritage church hall.

Highlighting its importance, the Surrey Heritage Advisory Commission awarded Cloverdale United Church a plaque designating it as a city heritage site. This plaque is now prominently displayed outside the church, recognizing its role in the community and its architectural significance. The plaque details how the church exemplifies community spirit, particularly during a time when Cloverdale served as the administrative and commercial center of Surrey.

“Cloverdale United Church is significant as a demonstration of community spirit in Cloverdale, at a time when Cloverdale was the administrative and commercial centre of Surrey,” the plaque reads.

Maxwell-Lewis described the plaque’s designation as “lovely,” emphasizing its acknowledgment of the church’s service to the community and the milestones it will reach in 2025. The plaque is located next to the church’s distinctive red front door, serving as a testament to its historical value.

New Leadership and Community Engagement

Another notable event during the gala was the installation of the church’s first Associate Minister, Youngsun Cheon. He recently participated in his inaugural service, bringing new energy to the church’s vibrant congregation, which includes a significant Korean community. Under the guidance of Cho Hee Won, congregation volunteers are actively leading regular English language learning classes for new immigrants, fostering inclusivity and community integration.

Among the attendees was May Taylor, a church member and award-winning heritage quilter. Over the years, she has gifted several quilts to the church, one of which was showcased during the evening’s festivities. Maxwell-Lewis noted that Taylor was present to share the stories behind the quilts, enriching the event with personal narratives that connect the congregation to their history.

The gala not only celebrated the church’s past but also set the stage for its future as a cornerstone of community life in Cloverdale and Surrey. As Cloverdale United Church approaches these significant anniversaries, it continues to inspire and engage its community through its long-standing tradition of service and fellowship.
