A charity based in Hamilton is set to distribute 500 food hampers to local Muslim families in need ahead of Ramadan. Mishka Social Services is continuing its annual initiative in partnership with Muslim Hands Canada, aimed at supporting families in Hamilton and Niagara. The distribution event will occur on Saturday, March 16, 2024, from 08:00 to 17:00 at the Downtown Mosque in Hamilton and the Peace Mosque in Niagara.

Eimaan Shahid, the community engagement and development coordinator at Mishka Social Services, expressed her enthusiasm for the project, stating, “It’s such a great privilege to be able to give back to our families and the families that we’ve been working with over the years.” The food baskets will include essential items such as lentils, rice, canned tomatoes, and spices, all selected to meet the religious dietary requirements of the families they serve. Shahid highlighted that many food banks often do not cater to the specific dietary needs of Muslim families, making this initiative particularly important.

The charity has observed a significant increase in demand for its services. Last year, Mishka Social Services provided support to approximately 600 families, and Shahid anticipates the need will only grow this year. “Ramadan is a really big time for the Muslim community where we all get together, have family gatherings, and enjoy large family dinners,” she noted. This communal atmosphere, however, can exacerbate food insecurity for many families, particularly for newcomers to Canada who may be struggling to adjust.

The distribution event reflects a broader trend observed in Ontario. According to a report released by Feed Ontario, the number of individuals relying on food banks has risen for the ninth consecutive year, with over 1 million people accessing these resources in the past year. Carolyn Stewart, CEO of Feed Ontario, emphasized the interconnected nature of poverty and food insecurity, stating, “We’re hoping that this report serves as an alarm bell for the interconnected issues of poverty and the reality we’re seeing out there.”

This year’s food distribution is Mishka’s largest undertaking, occurring just before the holy month of Ramadan, which begins on March 10, 2024. The charity typically conducts monthly food distributions, but this event is a highlight for volunteers and beneficiaries alike. Shahid mentioned that around 40 volunteers are expected to assist on Saturday, creating a vibrant and supportive environment. “It’s always such a fun, dynamic environment getting to work with others who share a common passion for serving other people,” she said.

The initiative not only provides essential food supplies but also fosters a sense of community among participants. By addressing food insecurity, Mishka Social Services aims to ensure that families can fully participate in the communal celebrations of Ramadan, enhancing their overall experience during this significant period.
