Celebrate the Holidays with Community Spirit at Pembroke 50+ Centre
With just 19 shopping days left until Christmas, the Pembroke 50+ Centre is embracing the festive spirit by offering a variety of classes, community events, and gift options designed to bring joy throughout the season. As holiday preparations ramp up, the Centre invites both new and existing members to take advantage of their special offerings that promise to enhance the festive experience.
One of the standout offerings this year is the Centre’s “One Sign-Up, Two Years of Benefits” initiative. New members and those who have not yet renewed can purchase a membership valid until March 2026 for only $10. Additionally, members can prepay $25 for the 2026-2027 year. This membership serves as a year-long gift that fosters connection, learning, and community engagement.
Creative Learning and Outdoor Activities
Art enthusiasts will find plenty to engage with as renowned instructor Robin Knox returns to lead a Christmas-themed watercolour class on December 12 at 9:30 a.m.. The class, priced at $25 and inclusive of all supplies, promises an encouraging environment where participants can express their creativity. Following this festive class, Knox will extend her offerings with a 4-week Winter Wildlife watercolour course commencing on January 9, available for $100.
For those interested in other mediums, Helen Nephin will resume her popular acrylic and oil painting sessions starting on January 12, with six-week classes available on Mondays or Tuesdays for $60. Nephin’s sessions are known for their friendly atmosphere, making them accessible for both beginners and seasoned artists.
The Centre also encourages members to enjoy the outdoors. The final Walk & Talk of the year is scheduled for December 8, meeting at 1 p.m. in the parking lot of Petawawa Terrace. Participants are advised to dress appropriately for the weather, bring refreshments, and prepare for a two-hour walk. This event wraps up a year of outdoor activities that have fostered community connections and physical well-being.
Volunteer Opportunities and Festive Gatherings
The Pembroke 50+ Centre is also seeking volunteers for its Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP). This initiative provides essential services to those in need, with roles including client greeting and simple tax return preparation. Training is available, and no prior experience is necessary. This opportunity allows individuals to contribute meaningfully to their community on a flexible schedule.
A beloved holiday tradition at the Centre is the Christmas Sweater Luncheon. Participants are encouraged to don their most festive sweaters and join the celebration. Tickets are priced at $10, with sales extended through December 8 to accommodate last-minute preparations. This year, the event will partner with the Dementia Society Ottawa & Renfrew County, creating a space for shared stories, a hearty lunch, homemade desserts, and light-hearted games.
As the holiday season unfolds, the Pembroke 50+ Centre stands as a beacon of community spirit, offering engaging classes and events that foster connection and joy. Each activity contributes to a greater sense of belonging, reminding everyone of the true meaning of the holidays. For more information and to join in the festivities, interested individuals can contact the Centre at 613-735-1226.
