Captain Christensen Leads Raiders to 5-2 Victory Over Pats
The Prince Albert Raiders secured a decisive 5-2 victory against the Regina Pats on March 15, 2024, marking their sixth meeting of the season. This win not only showcased the Raiders’ offensive prowess but also placed them in contention for the East Division title, contingent upon their performance in the remaining games of the week.
From the outset, the Raiders dominated the ice. They opened the scoring halfway through the first period with a goal from Jonah Sivertson, who netted his 17th of the season at 9:34. The play began with Daxon Rudolph, whose initial shot ricocheted off the glass, creating a scramble in front of the net. Despite not receiving an assist, the sequence set the stage for Sivertson’s goal.
The Pats responded quickly, leveling the score just two minutes later. At 11:37, Shea Rollason‘s pass from his own blue line found former Raider Dayce Derkatch, who scored with a backhand shot that slipped past Raiders’ goalie Michal Orsulak.
The Raiders regained the lead at 16:23, thanks to a determined effort from their line featuring Evan Smith, Connor Howe, and Ben Harvey. After pinning the Pats in their zone for an extended shift, the Raiders capitalized. Max Heise won the puck, passing it to Owen Corkish, who assisted Daxon Rudolph in scoring his 23rd goal of the season with a wrist shot through traffic.
By the end of the first period, the Raiders held a 2-1 lead and outshot the Pats 17-6.
In the second period, the Pats found an equalizer at 10:30. Keets Fawcett intercepted a mishandled puck at the Raiders’ blue line, leading to a 3-on-1 break. Fawcett passed to Zach Lansard, whose shot was redirected into the net by Ephram McNutt, tying the game at 2-2.
The Raiders responded with a power play goal at 18:26, scored by their captain, Justice Christensen. After collecting a rebound, he received a pass from Brock Cripps and fired a wrist shot for his 13th goal of the season, putting the Raiders back in front at 3-2.
With the second period concluding, the Raiders had increased their shot advantage to 33-11.
The third period saw the Raiders strike early again, with Braeden Cootes extending his scoring streak. He found the net at 2:25, lifting a backhand shot from an acute angle after receiving a pass from Jonah Sivertson. This goal marked Cootes’ 19th of the season.
As the game neared its conclusion, the Pats pulled their goaltender, Taylor Tabashniuk, for an extra attacker. The Raiders, however, maintained control. Brandon Gorzynski sealed the victory with an empty-net goal, marking his 24th of the season, with assists from Christensen and Evan Smith.
The final score stood at 5-2, with the Raiders outshooting the Pats 44-23. Cootes, Christensen, and Sivertson each recorded a goal and an assist, while Rudolph continued to chase the franchise record for goals by a defenseman in a season.
Orsulak demonstrated solid performance in net, achieving a save percentage of 0.913 with 21 saves on 23 shots. His ability to control rebounds was crucial, as he avoided allowing second-chance opportunities for the Pats.
This victory not only highlights the Raiders’ current form but also sets the stage for their upcoming matches as they aim for the East Division title. With 17 games remaining in the season, the focus now shifts to maintaining momentum and capitalizing on their offensive capabilities.
