Canada Shines as National Geographic Names Top Destinations for 2026
National Geographic has announced its list of the world’s top 25 destinations to visit in 2026, featuring two remarkable Canadian locations and a third that earned a prestigious readers’ choice award. The announcement was made on October 21, 2023, highlighting the unique attractions and vibrant cultures of these destinations.
Quebec and Vancouver Recognized for Unique Offerings
Quebec has earned the second spot on the list, praised for its stunning natural landscapes and rich cultural heritage. National Geographic described the province’s Nibiischii Park, which is the first national park managed by a First Nation. The park, created by the Cree Nation of Mistissini, protects over 4,000 square miles of pristine lake country in the Eeyou Istchee-James Bay region of Northern Quebec.
The park encompasses the largest wildlife reserve in Quebec, Albanel-Mistassini-and-Waconichi Lakes. Visitors can enjoy a variety of outdoor activities, including fishing and paddling, while taking in breathtaking views from a newly constructed cliffside walkway and suspension bridge. National Geographic emphasized the park’s potential as a summer wilderness retreat, showcasing the region’s unparalleled natural beauty.
Moving to the west coast, Vancouver secured the twelfth position on the list. The city is set to be a focal point during the FIFA World Cup in June and July 2026, making it an attractive destination for sports enthusiasts. National Geographic noted that favorable currency conversions, new direct flights from Europe, and straightforward entry requirements enhance Vancouver’s appeal as one of the 16 North American host cities for the tournament.
Beyond the excitement of the World Cup, Vancouver offers visitors a chance to explore its natural wonders, described as the city’s “wild side.” Indigenous-led tours provide a unique perspective on the area’s history and culture, enriching the experience for tourists.
Banff Named Readers’ Choice Winner
In a notable recognition, Banff, located in Alberta, was awarded National Geographic’s Readers’ Choice Winner. The publication praised Banff as a “stunning alpine jewel,” where urban sophistication meets untamed nature. Visitors can savor locally roasted coffee on Banff Avenue and have the opportunity to spot wildlife such as grizzly bears in the surrounding areas.
As the town transforms into a winter wonderland, skiers flock to three major resorts: Mount Norquay, Lake Louise, and Banff Sunshine Village. Banff seamlessly combines adventure with a vibrant social scene, showcasing celebrated landmarks like the Fairmont Banff Springs and a host of local eateries and galleries featuring Indigenous art. Popular nightlife venues, including Melissa’s Missteak and Rose & Crown, contribute to the town’s lively atmosphere.
The recognition by National Geographic not only highlights the beauty and diversity of Canadian destinations but also underscores the growing interest in travel to these unique locations. With their rich histories and breathtaking landscapes, Quebec, Vancouver, and Banff are poised to attract international visitors in the years to come.
