Calgary Tops Rankings as Two B.C. Cities Shine in Canada
Two cities in British Columbia, Victoria and Vancouver, have been recognized as among the best places to live in Canada, according to a recent report by Global Citizen Solutions. While both cities made the top fifteen, they did not secure a position in the top five, with Calgary taking the lead.
The report evaluated various criteria, including average salary, home prices, and major industries, to determine the rankings. Calgary emerged as the top city with an average salary of $58,243 and an average home price of $653,903. This reflects not only its economic stability but also the attractiveness of its job market.
Victoria and Vancouver’s Rankings
Victoria was ranked sixth in the report, just ahead of Vancouver, which came in eighth. Victoria boasts an average salary of $54,007 and an average home price of $961,000. The report highlights the city’s diverse employment sectors, including technology, tourism, transportation, hospitality, and healthcare. It notes that Victoria is particularly appealing to young Canadians due to its blend of urban life and natural beauty.
Conversely, Vancouver, with a higher average salary of $69,512, faces challenges with its average home price of $1,239,418. The report attributes Vancouver’s lower ranking to its high cost of living and housing affordability issues. Despite these challenges, the city remains a hub for technology, innovation, and tourism, which contributes to its dynamic economy.
Living in British Columbia
The report outlines that Vancouver is the largest city in British Columbia, but its reputation for high expenses may deter some potential residents. The city’s robust public transportation system, including buses, SkyTrain, and SeaBus, enhances the overall livability, making commuting easier for its residents.
Other cities that featured in the top fifteen include Quebec City, Fredericton, Charlottetown, Saskatoon, Toronto, Waterloo, Winnipeg, Halifax, Hamilton, Montreal, Edmonton, and Ottawa. Each city brings its unique attributes to the table, but Calgary’s combination of affordability and job opportunities has positioned it as the top choice for many Canadians.
As residents of Victoria and Vancouver reflect on this recognition, their cities continue to attract attention for their quality of life despite the challenges posed by housing costs. The rankings serve as a reminder of the ongoing dialogue surrounding urban living in Canada and the factors that contribute to a city’s desirability.
