Bobby’s Hospice Celebrates 15 Years of Compassionate Care
Bobby’s Hospice in Saint John, N.B., marked a significant milestone on March 15, 2025, celebrating its 15th anniversary. This event commemorated the day the first patient was welcomed into Atlantic Canada’s first dedicated end-of-life care centre in 2010. The hospice provides a ten-bed, 24/7 facility designed to support patients with advanced, terminal illnesses and their families, offering a comfortable environment during their final days.
Chris O’Brien, Medical Director at Bobby’s Hospice, has been with the facility since its inception. He reflects on the growth of the hospice, noting, “We’ve grown a lot over the years.” The centre now employs a part-time recreational therapist to help provide comfort and distraction for patients during their stay.
In addition to recreational therapy, the hospice offers services such as pet therapy and music therapy, aimed at helping patients relax and cope with their situations. To celebrate the anniversary, Bobby’s Hospice hosted an open house, inviting community members to engage with staff and learn more about the work being done in the city’s lower west side.
O’Brien emphasized the importance of educating the public about hospice care, stating, “The reality is hospices aren’t everywhere, and I think our general public likes a little education.” Many visitors to the open house were family members of patients who had previously received care at the hospice, sharing their experiences and memories.
Hospice care differs significantly from hospital care. Each of the ten beds at Bobby’s Hospice is situated in a private room equipped with a window and a bathroom, ensuring privacy during the final stages of life. O’Brien explained, “It hasn’t got the buzz and the bells and all the noises that happen in a hospital.” He emphasized that the focus at Bobby’s Hospice is on comfort rather than life-sustaining therapies.
The community has been supportive of Bobby’s Hospice since its establishment. The centre organizes various fundraising events throughout the year, including an annual gala at the Saint John Trade and Convention Centre. While fundraising plays a crucial role, the facility primarily operates through government funding.
As Bobby’s Hospice continues to provide compassionate care, it remains a vital resource for families facing the challenges of end-of-life decisions. With its commitment to comfort and dignity, the hospice stands as a testament to the importance of quality care in the final stages of life.
