The BC Girl Guides have issued a warning regarding potential scams associated with their annual cookie sales on Vancouver Island. As this popular fundraising initiative launched earlier this week, the organization emphasized the importance of purchasing cookies through legitimate channels to ensure funds directly support their programs.

Girl Guide Cookie sales typically feature boxes of chocolate mint cookies priced at $6 each. Proceeds from these sales fund various activities for girls, including science projects, outdoor adventures, art programs, and international travel. This year, however, the organization has reported increasing instances of scams, particularly in the Sooke area.

According to the Girl Guides, individuals have been creating fraudulent accounts on social media platforms like Facebook. These scammers join community groups to solicit e-transfers from unsuspecting customers, often promising cookie deliveries that never occur. One alarming example cited was a scammer advertising cookies even before the official shipment from the Girl Guides’ baker had been dispatched.

“There have been recent scam attempts observed on Vancouver Island, in the Kootenays, and elsewhere in B.C.,” the organization stated in a message released on Monday. They strongly advise customers to purchase cookies directly from authorized sellers to avoid falling victim to these schemes.

To facilitate legitimate purchases, the Girl Guides encourage customers to visit designated “cookie booths” located outside local businesses and other public venues. These booths will accept cash and a variety of digital payment options, including credit, debit, and tap payments. The organization also highlighted that cookie sales provide vital funding for programs that empower thousands of girls each year.

For those interested in supporting the Girl Guides while enjoying delicious cookies, the organization will be hosting a special “Cookie Day” on October 4, during which cookies will be available for purchase at most Michaels craft store locations across British Columbia.

“Cookie funds power everything that we offer for thousands of girls every year,” the Girl Guides emphasized. They urge community members to ensure their contributions benefit the organization and its members, rather than fraudulent actors.

As the cookie season progresses, the BC Girl Guides remain committed to providing enjoyable and safe fundraising experiences for supporters. By purchasing cookies through official channels, customers can help empower young people in their communities while enjoying a beloved treat.
