Assiniboine College Student Alec Walters Earns International Award
Assiniboine College student Alec Walters has been awarded the prestigious Manitoba Council for International Education (MCIE) International Student Award at the Manitoba Legislative Building. This recognition highlights his academic excellence and significant contributions to the community.
Alec Walters: A Leader and Advocate
Walters, who serves as the president of the college’s Students’ Association, was one of four exceptional international students honored by the council. Expressing surprise at receiving the award, he shared his joy with his sister, Alexia, a former college instructor who inspired his journey to Canada.
“Growing up in Jamaica taught me the value of community and being together for each other,” Walters said. His background in education has shaped his approach to leadership and wellness initiatives at the college. “I want to bring that same energy and commitment to wellness here.”
Brandy Robertson, an instructor in social service work at Assiniboine, praised Walters for his inspiring presence. “His drive to learn and grow goes far beyond what’s expected,” she stated. “He approaches every challenge with compassion and positivity.” This enthusiasm positions Walters for success in both his career and personal life.
Building Connections and Promoting Wellness
Upon his arrival in Canada, Walters faced the challenge of making connections. “It was often a lonely experience,” he remarked. Encouraged by his sister, he joined the Students’ Association, which transformed his experience and allowed him to create supportive spaces for fellow students.
Walters has made a significant impact on campus, recognized for his initiatives such as the Wellness Wagon, which provides stress-relief resources, and events focused on men’s mental health. These initiatives aim to break the stigma surrounding mental health and encourage open conversations among students.
“Much of my passion for improved mental health initiatives, especially among men, has guided my time in the Social Service Worker program at Assiniboine,” Walters noted. As he progresses in his studies, he remains committed to challenging societal norms that discourage men from seeking help.
The MCIE award has further fueled Walters’ determination to support others. “It makes me want to go further,” he stated, emphasizing his desire to help international students and newcomers. He encourages them not to fear mistakes, as they often provide valuable lessons.
“Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, and today is a gift, so make the most of it,” he concluded, underscoring his belief in the importance of perseverance and community support.
Walters’ journey exemplifies the potential for international students to thrive and make meaningful contributions, leaving a lasting impact on their communities. His recognition by the Manitoba Council for International Education serves as a testament to his dedication and leadership.
