About 180 Christmas hampers filled with food and gifts were distributed to families in Winnipeg’s North End on December 16, 2023. Soldiers from the Fort Garry Horse army reserve participated in “Operation Parcel Push,” an annual initiative aimed at spreading holiday cheer within the community.

Dressed in green camouflage, the reservists loaded brown boxes from the Christmas Cheer Board into minivans for delivery in the area surrounding the regiment’s home at the Strachan Armoury, formerly known as McGregor Armoury, located on Machray Avenue. This tradition has been ongoing for more than 40 years and reflects the army’s commitment to supporting local residents.

Major Matthew Bittner, who has been involved in Operation Parcel Push for nearly two decades, emphasized the importance of community engagement. “We want to show that we are part of the community, and it’s just giving back to where we’re from,” he stated.

Captain James Smith echoed this sentiment, highlighting the dual role of military personnel. “We’re also part of the community as well, and we always fight for or participate in community events,” he said. The soldiers typically focus on homes within a 10-block radius of the armoury, where residents often express excitement upon receiving their holiday hampers. Even early morning deliveries are met with joy, particularly when they include gift cards or toys for children.

Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew joined the soldiers as they delivered parcels throughout the neighbourhood. Reflecting on his past experiences with the initiative, Kinew remarked, “You always see smiles, you always see a lot of joy, and that’s what the holidays are all about.” He praised the military’s involvement, stating, “The fact that you can see the military lending a hand in such a way, I think it’s just good for the heart.” Kinew acknowledged the ongoing needs within the community, expressing appreciation for the soldiers’ efforts to support local families.

Major Bittner described participating in Operation Parcel Push as “one of our fun days” compared to the rigors of military training. He noted that the event is centered around enjoying the spirit of the season, saying, “Today is all about enjoying the Christmas cheer.”

As the reservists continue their work, their efforts underscore a commitment not only to service but also to fostering stronger community ties through acts of kindness during the festive season.
