Algoma Public Health (APH) has initiated the nomination process for its 2024 Public Health Champion – Early Years Edition. This award aims to honour individuals and organizations that significantly impact the lives of children and families within the Algoma district. Nominations opened on January 11, 2024, and will remain open until January 21, 2024.

This year, the award’s focus is on those who contribute to healthy child development among children aged 0 to 6 years. Dr. Jennifer Loo, the medical officer of health and CEO of APH, emphasized the importance of early childhood development, stating, “Healthy child development begins long before school. It is shaped by supportive relationships, opportunities to play and learn, and environments where families feel included.” The awards aim to acknowledge community members who foster these essential conditions.

Nominations can be submitted across four distinct categories:

Recognizing Community Contributions

The first category, the Parent/Caregiver Champion, celebrates the efforts of parents, grandparents, and other caregivers who provide exceptional support to young children. These individuals are often the backbone of their communities, organizing local activities and sharing resources that promote the well-being of families.

The Professional Champion category acknowledges the dedication of educators, healthcare workers, and service providers who positively influence the lives of young children. These professionals assist families in accessing essential services, adapting educational activities, and creating nurturing environments for learning and growth.

Another important category is the Youth/Student Champion, which honours young leaders aged 24 years and under who actively engage in early years programs. Their involvement can range from volunteering in community initiatives to mentoring younger children, showcasing their energy and compassion in supporting families.

Lastly, the Organization Champion highlights programs, agencies, and community groups that provide vital support to children and families. These organizations play a crucial role in reducing barriers, offering inclusive activities, and collaborating with partners to enhance services across the Algoma district.

Acknowledging Excellence in Child Development

Award recipients will be recognised during the Algoma Public Health Board of Health meeting on February 25, 2024. This event serves as a platform to celebrate the dedication and commitment of those who work tirelessly to improve the lives of children and families in the region.

Nominations can be submitted through various methods, including online, via email, or by mail. Detailed information, including the nomination form, is available on the APH Public Health Champion nomination page.

By shining a spotlight on the individuals and organizations making a difference, Algoma Public Health aims to inspire further community involvement in supporting healthy child development.
