Abbotsford’s Louise Burns Seeks Renovation to Expand Food Aid
Louise Burns, a dedicated community advocate in Abbotsford, British Columbia, is seeking renovations to her home to enhance her efforts in feeding vulnerable populations. Over the years, Burns has transformed her initiative from a one-woman operation distributing food from her car into a substantial program supported by volunteers and local organizations. The proposed renovations will allow her to streamline operations and potentially increase the number of individuals she assists.
The renovation project, spearheaded by local contractor Duston DeHart, aims to convert Burns’ garage into a functional workspace. This change is essential for managing the construction of over 1,500 sandwiches distributed weekly to those in need. DeHart emphasizes the importance of creating a more suitable environment for Burns, who currently finds her home overrun by supplies. “We’re trying to make it so that when she comes home at the end of the day, she can close the door and be home rather than have to clean up the entire time,” he stated.
Community Support and Personal Stories
The impact of Burns’ work resonates deeply within the community. Volunteer Jeannette Boxall, who met Burns three years ago, has observed firsthand the extensive network of support surrounding her initiatives. “Pretty much every group in Abbotsford will come through or know her and what she’s doing,” Boxall remarked.
Among those whose lives have been positively influenced by Burns is Amanda Shank, who encountered Burns during a challenging time in her life. “I was homeless on the streets when I first met Louise about seven and a half years ago,” Shank shared. Her gratitude for Burns’ support is evident, as she now actively participates in the sandwich-making efforts, helping others who find themselves in similar situations.
Burns’ initiatives have expanded significantly, reaching not just the homeless community but also low-income residents in Abbotsford, Mission, and Langley. Shank notes the substantial growth of the operation over the years, which has allowed Burns to supply food to thousands of individuals.
Funding the Renovation
Burns recognizes the collaborative effort needed to sustain and expand her mission. She has built strong relationships with various local businesses, including Save-On Foods, Costco, and The Salvation Army, which provide vital food donations. “I pick up donations seven days a week,” Burns explained, detailing her logistical efforts to gather and distribute food in partnership with local charities such as SARA for Women and Joshua House Recovery Ministries.
To facilitate the renovation, DeHart has initiated an online fundraiser with a goal of $7,000. Although construction will be handled by volunteers at no cost, financial assistance is required for necessary materials. The renovation plans include installing commercial-grade countertops, plumbing fixtures, and refrigeration units, among other essentials.
The fundraiser can be accessed at gofundme.com/f/help-louise-build-a-kitchen-to-feed-our-homeless-community. With ongoing community support, Burns hopes that the renovations will enable her to further her outreach, including providing furniture assistance to families in need. “We have these guys from Joshua House who are going out on their own, and they start off with nothing,” she noted, underscoring the ongoing need for support within the community.
The proposed changes to Burns’ home reflect not only a physical transformation but also a renewed commitment to uplifting those in need across the Fraser Valley.
