Local hospitals in the Windsor-Essex region are urging visitors to wear masks as respiratory virus season begins. With rising cases of influenza and other respiratory illnesses, Windsor Regional Hospital recommends that all visitors don hospital-issued masks when they are within two metres of patients.

While masking is not mandated in non-clinical areas such as lobbies and waiting rooms, the hospital stated that it is “highly recommended” for those in waiting areas and lounges, particularly in high-risk zones like the emergency room, cancer centre, and dialysis units. Masks will be available at all hospital entrances for visitors.

Hospital Protocols and Community Health

Starting Monday, October 2, 2023, all hospital staff and volunteers are also required to wear masks when within two metres of patients. Additional personal protective equipment (PPE) may be necessary during specific circumstances, such as outbreaks.

According to Windsor Regional Hospital, “Influenza, COVID-19, and other respiratory viruses continue to circulate in our community.” The hospital encourages the public to heed the advice of medical professionals regarding masking, particularly if feeling unwell. They also recommend checking with family practitioners about vaccination schedules.

At Erie Shores Healthcare, located in Leamington, similar protocols are in effect. Staff members must wear masks near patients, while visitors are advised to do the same. Those exhibiting symptoms are requested to refrain from entering the hospital.

Rising Illness Rates and Community Guidance

The healthcare facility has reported several confirmed cases of influenza, with expectations of increased cases of both influenza and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) in the coming weeks.

As the season progresses, hospitals in the region aim to ensure the safety of patients and staff by promoting the importance of masking. With a growing number of respiratory illnesses, adhering to these guidelines is crucial for community health.
