Victoria Surgeon Champions Women’s Health and Cancer Care
Dr. Heather Emmerton-Coughlin, a surgeon in Victoria, British Columbia, has emerged as a leading advocate for women’s health and cancer care. With breast cancer affecting one in eight women and accounting for 13 percent of cancer-related deaths among females, her commitment to this cause is both timely and vital.
Emmerton-Coughlin’s journey into medicine transitioned from a childhood dream of becoming an astronaut. After interning at the Canadian Space Agency, she realized that the isolation of the role was not for her. “It isn’t the same as being able to really sit with people and interact with people and eventually to help people,” she noted. This pivotal moment led her to pursue a career as a surgeon, where she has since changed countless lives for the better.
Her dedication to patient care is evident in her work as the co-founder of the South Island breast cancer program. This innovative initiative allows women to be matched quickly with surgeons, minimizing the often painful system delays in cancer treatment. “System delays are often one of the hardest parts, and so we wanted to make sure women were getting their care as efficiently as possible, and this has really allowed for that,” Emmerton-Coughlin explained.
The inspiration for her focus on cancer care came during her residency when she met a young cancer patient who was already palliative. “She taught me that there can be joy even in those darkest moments, where there isn’t hope still for a cure but there is hope, still, for a meaningful life,” Emmerton-Coughlin recalled. This encounter deeply influenced her approach to patient care and advocacy.
Beyond her surgical work, Emmerton-Coughlin has actively contributed to fundraising efforts for health services. At the Victoria Hospitals Foundation Visions Gala in November 2023, she played a crucial role in raising a remarkable $3.7 million for local healthcare initiatives. Colleen Bronson from the Victoria Hospitals Foundation emphasized the impact of donations, stating, “She always makes it really clear how transformational it is, the equipment that our donors fund for her practice or her patients. She expresses that she feels that impact every day.”
Emmerton-Coughlin, who has been a surgeon for 14 years, finds fulfillment in her work and her role as a mother of two. “I feel blessed every day that I get to do what I do,” she said. Her passion for her profession and her community shines through in her daily interactions and commitment to improving women’s health.
The current campaign by the Victoria Hospitals Foundation focuses on supporting women’s health. Contributions can be made through their website, allowing the community to invest in the ongoing efforts to enhance healthcare in the region.
Through her unwavering dedication, Dr. Heather Emmerton-Coughlin stands as a beacon of hope and advocacy for women facing cancer, making significant strides in a field that continues to need attention and innovation.
