On September 20, 2023, riders from the Tour de Rock will embark on a significant 1,200-kilometre journey across Vancouver Island, aiming to raise awareness and funds for childhood cancer research. The annual event, organized by Cops for Cancer, culminates in Greater Victoria during the first week of October. Each kilometre of the ride is dedicated to children battling cancer, with a particular focus on supporting life-saving pediatric cancer research and programs.

The initiative features 18 riders, each paired with a junior “honourary” rider—a pediatric cancer survivor who represents the heart of the event. Kenny Podmore, a former town crier from Sidney and a long-time participant since the ride’s inception 28 years ago, described the atmosphere as “amazing.” He noted, “It’s very emotional. You know from a town point of view, we’re at the end of the tour, so they are extremely tired, but they come in with smiling faces and they’re just given such a big welcome.”

The Tour de Rock has garnered substantial support from communities throughout Greater Victoria, raising over $28 million since its launch. The event actively engages local communities through various stops at schools and businesses along the route. For 2023, the goal is to raise $1 million to support critical research and programs. Leading the fundraising efforts this year is Will Arnold, who has already raised $28,480.

Arnold emphasizes the urgency of the cause, stating, “One child with cancer is one child too many.” A portion of the funds raised will benefit programs such as Camp Goodtimes, a medically supported camp experience where children can enjoy a respite from their challenges. A family who participated in the camp noted, “It was the best days we’ve had since our son’s diagnosis nearly a year ago. I cried when we left. I’m not a crier. I was just so incredibly grateful and happy to have had that time as a family.”

Podmore recalls a poignant encounter from 22 years ago with a family of a young boy who ultimately survived cancer. He receives an annual Christmas card from them, symbolizing the lasting impact of the event on families affected by cancer. He stated, “To do anything like this, you need people on board,” highlighting the collective effort of not only the riders—who include police officers, firefighters, paramedics, military personnel, and local community members—but also coordinators, sponsors, and the public who contribute through donations and support.

Community engagement remains strong, with local organizations such as the Saanich Peninsula Lions Food Bank providing resources for the event. A food truck, with all provisions supplied by Thrifty Foods in Sidney, will support the riders and their supporters.

The riders are expected to arrive in Sidney around 18:00 on October 1, 2023, after passing through Sooke and Langford earlier that day. Podmore anticipates a warm welcome, including a special appearance by Betsy, a vintage fire engine, at the Sidney Fire Hall. The Tour de Rock will continue through Oak Bay and Victoria on October 2, concluding on October 3 in Esquimalt, Saanich, and Victoria.

Podmore encourages community members to participate in this momentous occasion, stating, “It’s extra special. The cause speaks for itself.” The collective effort of the riders and the support from the community highlight a powerful commitment to fighting childhood cancer and fostering hope for affected families across the region.
