Teen Stands by Mother Facing Second Kidney Transplant
Nineteen-year-old Alexander James Morrison, known to friends as A.J., is facing a challenging moment as his mother, Mary Jo Vradis, 47, requires a second kidney transplant. A.J., who has overcome significant challenges of his own, now finds himself in a position to support his mother during this critical time.
Born without a cerebellum, A.J. has cerebral palsy and has faced various physical obstacles throughout his life. He did not crawl or speak until the age of three and underwent major surgery at twelve to stabilize his legs. Despite these difficulties, he has maintained a positive outlook, often using humor to lighten the mood. “Call me what you want, Mike, just don’t call me late for dinner,” A.J. quips during an interview at Variety Village in Scarborough, where he serves as an ambassador for youth with disabilities.
A.J.’s life took a serious turn when he learned that his mother’s first kidney transplant, received after years of dialysis, is failing. “She did a pretty good job of hiding it from me,” he admits. His mother, who managed her health condition while raising him, feels the weight of her situation. “I just can’t. It’s like a slow death,” she says, as she prepares to return to dialysis and search for a living donor.
Mary Jo’s initial transplant was a result of nine years of waiting after being placed on the organ donation list. With a new website, mjneedskidney.com, she is actively seeking a living donor. The site features insights into the organ donation process, including a link to the documentary “Tales from the Organ Trade,” which details the complexities of organ donation and transplantation.
A.J. is eager to learn more about his mother’s health and the process of kidney donation. After overhearing conversations about her condition, he offered to be the donor. His mother quickly dismissed the idea, emphasizing that A.J. has already endured enough medical challenges. “No compatibility testing, even,” she states firmly.
Despite his physical limitations, A.J. has developed a strong physique through swimming, jiu-jitsu, and other activities at Variety Village. He jokes about his early struggles, recalling how his mother bathed him in a salad bowl as a baby. “That baby is now a ripped young man,” he says, displaying a blend of pride and humor.
While A.J. works on building a professional resume, he balances his responsibilities with a part-time position at Variety Village, where he leads tours and engages with visitors. “I try to be funny and make jokes to take my mind and my mom’s mind off all the pain she must be feeling,” he explains. His love for his mother is apparent as he expresses his desire to do everything possible to support her. “I love her so much. I don’t want to lose her,” he confesses, breaking down in tears for the first time during the interview.
Community support has rallied around Mary Jo and A.J. as they navigate this trying situation. A fundraising campaign aims to raise $260,000 to assist with expenses related to her health. As of now, they have already raised $246,391 with just days left to reach their goal.
Individuals and organizations have contributed, showcasing a strong community response. Donations range from $10,000 in memory of loved ones to smaller amounts from various supporters. Each contribution helps reinforce the sense of solidarity within the community, ensuring that Variety Village remains a supportive environment for families facing similar challenges.
As A.J. moves forward, he continues to exhibit resilience and determination, not only in his own journey but also in his commitment to his mother. This bond, forged through challenges, exemplifies the strength of family and community in the face of adversity.
