Sweden Champions Nature Prescriptions for Health and Wellbeing

Sweden is making significant strides in healthcare by promoting the concept of “nature prescriptions,” encouraging citizens to engage with the natural environment for better health. This initiative follows a recent survey by YouGov indicating that two out of three respondents would consider spending more time outdoors if it were recommended by a healthcare professional.
Stacy Beller Stryer, associate medical director at ParkRXAmerica, a non-profit organization advocating for outdoor activities as a means to enhance health, emphasized the benefits of nature for physical and mental well-being. “Nature, social settings and culture have restorative powers, and evidently, Sweden has these assets in abundance,” she stated.
Nature as Medicine
The growing trend of nature prescriptions has emerged as a preventive healthcare strategy, with research demonstrating various health benefits. “We have made great strides in making nature prescription a more integral part of public health,” Beller Stryer noted. “But there is much more to be done.” She expressed hope that Sweden’s initiative would help dismantle institutional barriers, ultimately benefiting patients across the spectrum.
Sweden’s commitment to this innovative approach is reflected in its recognition as a leader in the promotion of health through nature. The country boasts an impressive natural environment, characterized by vast forests, pristine lakes, and clean air. These elements contribute to a lifestyle that inherently promotes well-being.
Travel as Therapy
In addition to nature prescriptions, Sweden is pioneering the concept of travel as a catalyst for health enhancement. The Visit Sweden tourism board claims it is “the first country in the world prescribed by doctors.” The board has compiled a list of scientifically vetted activities that healthcare providers can recommend as part of a holistic approach to wellness.
Susanne Andersson, CEO of Visit Sweden, articulated the essence of the Swedish lifestyle, stating, “The Swedish lifestyle naturally promotes wellbeing — from the free access to our stunning forests and lakes, to the fresh air, cooler summers, wholesome fika breaks, and our vibrant cultural life.” This rich tapestry of natural resources and cultural experiences is at the core of Sweden’s health strategy.
The concept of nature prescriptions aligns with a broader movement in healthcare that recognizes the importance of environmental factors in promoting health. As Sweden leads the way in this initiative, other countries may look to its model for inspiration in integrating nature into healthcare practices.
